Gave a good idea of what's there and how it might apply anywhere else. Maybe a little more compare /contrast between Maine and Midwest would be nice, as that perspective is not you're going to find in many hunters. Probably handfuls.
Here’s one thing I had a question about:One of the very best things that has helped me has been that I hit target panic/buck fever head-on and really worked on getting through that. It was one of the toughest parts of hunting that I had to overcome. But in the end, it was 100% worth the effort.
Can you describe what was happening before? The symptoms and what caused it. Then, how'd you fix it?
Here goes. Not sure if I will get what your looking for.
As far as Maine in the midwest? Midwest really is over simplified for sure. There is so many terrain differences between say S Missouri and S Iowa. But I love midwest farmland. When I travel, thats what I choose. Public, permission ground, small lease fees...lots of connections and friends in a lot of places. I hunt mostly the rut.
Lets just use KS to compare
Maine is 89% timber - KS is 90% farmland.
One is 89% cover - One is 90% food. So I always shoot for the lowest common denominator.
Maine has 5-15 dpsm - KS has 30-50 dpsm
Maine rack sizes by age class are significantly smaller. 3.5yr olds are typically 100-110" lots of 5.5yr olds dont even make it past 110".
Maine if land is not posted you can access without permission. KS is reverse posted. Maine people welcome bowhunters. 95% success on landowner permission. KS was more like 1% permission when we knocked on doors years ago.
KS I can count on certain days of the year and certain spots to produce older age class bucks. Lot more predictable. Maine is very unpredictable and most years, you would not even know what place the rut is at or even if it happened. You can sit all day and never see a deer. Early season urban, 2017 I sat for 40+ hrs before I killed one of my target bucks. I saw 1 small buck and the buck I killed during that time. 2014 I hunted Maine all season and never saw a 3.5yr buck from stand. KS can make me feel like I am a better hunter than I actually am, Maine makes you feel like you could not hunt your way out of a paper bag.
Midwest loves rack size. Maine is all about weight. Because racks are few and far between for big ones. Maine guys love to think the midwest is "easy" but so many come home empty handed who hunt there. Many think the midwest is all fenced in and that the deer are the size of dogs.
I just choose to embrace what I have and not what I don't. Maine is so big and has so much land open to hunt, your only limited by the time you have to scout. You could scout all day 5 days a week all year within 30min of here and never scout same place 2x. AND never pay a dime.
Awesome examples!

Mainebowhunter is such a BEAST. When he came to the BEAST over 3 years ago, they quit doing volkswagen tossing contests in Maine. I don't really know what that means either, but he's a BEAST. Guy looks like he can throw a VW farther than anyone I know. Ok I'm done now.
