Learning from Last Years Success

Unread postby tkohuntsMI » Mon Aug 12, 2019 12:25 am

Only had 10 days to hunt last year. Day 1 was warm with super variable winds. Only saw a 4 point and a few does. The wind was not right for me to sneak into the spot where I knew my target buck was. Day 2 was torrential downpour but forecast showed a break from 10-11 so I was in my stand before light snuck right by his bed which was a small elevated ledge on a steep 40 hill so I knew I needed to go in in complete darkness because he would lay with his back to the hill facing out towards my stand. I was absolutely drenched but knew that he’d probably get up when the rain tapered off and sure enough he did. He stood up in his bed munched on some leaves without moving which made me nervous that he’d just lay back down but instead he worked his was over to me came right below my stand and trashed a bunch of saplings and then eventually offered me a 20 yard shot. After 3 years of holding out and only selectively shooting does while waiting for a more mature buck it all came together after only 9hrs of total stand time! Few take aways. 1.) know where they are bedding! This played a huge role in my approach to hunting this spot. 2.) if the wind isn’t right don’t burn your spot by being impatient! 3.) use the elements and conditions to your favor. I’ve shot a lot of deer in the rain but they tend not to move much in torrential downpours. HOWEVER if it’s been raining hard thru the night into the morning you can almost bet on movement when that rain slows down or stops. 4.) Don’t overlook small parcels... this property was barely 4 acres
