I came across this log and I could see lots of sign of bears walking down it so I put a Covert scouting cam on it and set it to video. The number of bears using this log is amazing, plus I got videos of fishers, turkeys, coons, coyotes, etc. I have more than 100 videos in the last two weeks and the bears have wiped out my camera three times, but I keep putting back up the support stand. I'll leave it for a couple more weeks then put up a full YouTube video on all the stuff that went down that log, it's pretty amazing. Here's a short teaser.

Yes, you can't really tell from that particular video because it is low-light but she is black and the yearling cubs are dark brown. I have many more pics and videos of them. In 2-3 weeks, she will start to come into heat and run those cubs off so they will be on their own. If the yearling cubs are around when the males start to pursue her, they'll kill them if they get the chance. It gets pretty interesting around my place in late May and June when they are mating.

I guess it's just easy walking for them. No other reason I can think of.

Could be like a land mark to them as well. I see lots of crossings at drainage areas near huge trees with lots of different travel patterns all around that tree. Some of it is heading to thick bedding cover, I have also followed trails that stay just outside of the feathered edges. Or heading to feeding spots. It is a cool video to see and I know if I was walking through those woods I would definitely step up and walk along that log, just looks like a fun thing to do! HAHA

Re: Bears on a log
Years ago during the deer rifle season I ran across a fresh set of bear tracks in the snow.... curiosity got the best of me and I decided to follow and see if I could catch up to that bear, well I did eventually get a glimpse of the bear and it new I was following it. It was so interesting how that bear tried to loose me, it would walk on all logs and fallen trees trying to shake me. I never did visually see that bear again that day.... I was so fascinated and tuned into catching up to that bear I almost forgot it was deer season. That was a fun day!
