Late Morning Hunts

Whats ya'lls take on late morning hunts, as in getting in and set up by 8:30-9?

Depends on the situation but honestly, if you are going to go in the morning why waste valuable daylight?

Morning hunts can be situational anyway. In my home state I see good morning movement but I believe it has to do with cooler temps and shifting winds. When I travel to the Midwest its usually a rutcation and I don't want to waste daylight.

It's hot here in LA. I go in before daylight. I like to go in at daylight later in the year when it's cool and I don't want to sit in a stand.

I say hunt when you can hunt. Personally, I’d try to be out before daylight, but if I can’t, I’ll go out at that time. Maybe spend the morning/afternoon scouting and be set up early for an evening sit, or if it’s near rut, anything can happen.

I've done it many times, but once actually missed out on an opportunity because of it as well.....buck showed up and I wasn't completely set up yet.

Personally I would rather hunt those hours during pre-rut and rut than early in the season.

My best buck to date I killed at 8.42 am didn’t climb in tree until 7am.

It was early November our pre rut.

Here in Tennessee I have seen big bucks many times between 8-10am.

The biggest buck I have seen in my life I saw on a public land gravel road at 10.15 am December 27th.

Im a huge fan of Am hunting setting up on j hooks.

Certainly possible to kill a deer any hour of the day. I guess depends on the reasoning. If that's all you can get out, better than nothing. Especially peak rut. If there is some strategic reasoning you are probably overthinking it.

My two biggest bucks were shot at 830 and 9am. In rut.

I've seen the biggest bucks between 9 and 1030 during the chasing period.

Yinzer makes a good point if that's you're only option it's better than nothing.
For me it would depend entirely on how important the spot or area/spot is for the rest of the season.

Everyone has good points here. I have no idea what your situation is. Not sure if you're asking because you can't get in until 830-9am, or because you heard it from the Drury boys that getting in at that time on certain phases are better...Here's my take.

-Early season, if you are UNABLE to get there before dark and not able to sit until 830-9am It's hard to say, the encounter ratio definitely will not be in your favor and it all depends on where you are set up, being that bucks do move midday to browse or if there is a wind shift, but they aren't going far at all.
-During rut, if you are UNABLE to get there before dark and not able to sit until 830-9 Heck yes. It's the rut.
-Early season, if you ARE ABLE to get there before daylight Get in before daylight..no sense waiting until 830-9, obviously your chances are better at catching them coming back to bed.
-During rut, if you ARE ABLE to get there before daylight Get in before daylight. Pretty self explanatory.

I've had some of my best success and hot action between sunrise and 9 am. During the rut there usually is a lull for a few hours then around noon It seems the bucks start cruising again.

There is a Penn State study that shows the best buck movement during the rut is midday (10-2).

So setting up by 8:30-9:00 could be good.
