Ground Hunting Camo
Just wondering what some of you guys use for camo when hunting on the ground particularity dead cattails, CRP, foilage brown in color, etc.? Right now I use some Cabelas wooltimate camo but it is just to warm if it is any warmer than 20-30 degrees outside. It might just be in my head but when hunting on the ground and stalking close to whitetails I like to resemble my surroundings, and I've searched around and haven't really found a particular "pattern" that I like. I'm thinking just a regular brown long sleeve shirt might just be the best option.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I ground sat in several places last year that were either dead grasses or dead cattails. I made up a hat cover out of jute twine to break up my head and shoulders. I had a doe come to 8 yards before she saw me...I was sitting next to a tree right on her run. Even yet, she didn't bust out, just walked away.
I am going to put together a little better ghillie this year, but was also thinking along your lines. I am going to get some khaki colored shirt and pants and put some black vertical stripes (tiger like) with dye. Seen a video of a tiger moving through dead grasses, what amazing camo!

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I wear my tan carhartt jacket and bibs. Is it the best thing out there? Probably not. But it works. I don’t worry about pattern I worry about matching the color.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Lockdown, I do like that brown color that carhartt has I was actually leaning toward getting just a carhartt brown long-sleeve and khaki pants and possible spray painting them like what Wolverinebuckman mentioned with stripes and stuff. Im thinking along with the black stripes i would also incorporate a dark cream or cream color. You can see in that picture that Dewey posted that some of those reeds are almost white or really light brown. I'am just surprised that there really isn't a camo pattern out there the resembles that type of ground cover more.

Jan. 2017 SD public land 10 yard shot at the most. That’s exactly what I had on (not my hat of choice ). I don’t need the jacket for work anymore so I might sew some twine strings on it and use it for bowhunting only. I don’t think I’m going to add much for dark color at all. Just want to break up the solid brown a little. Granted if you’re hidden properly the cover should break it up for you.
JoeRE wears solid whites when hunting in snow. Makes sense that they pick up on the darker colors when you move (think brown limb printed on snow camo). He swears by plain white which is why I tried this in the cattails. Worked great.
I might paint some of the twine strings brown but I’m not putting any black on. Nothing in cattails is BLACK. Sure there are shadows and darker shades but black is too dark for my liking.
IMO most camo patterns are too dark. The pattern Dewey posted looks real good but even a lot of the wetlands stuff is too dark for dry cattails.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I have a ghille jacket I bought at Cabelas at least 10 years ago. The tan is so light you would think it would never work but it absolutely disappears in cattails, dry corn, golden rod and meadow/crp grass. My brother bought the same jacket a couple years ago and his is a much darker much less effective color.

This is a good word, Lockdown. A couple shades of brown would probably be better than black. I read contrast is the key. That's why tigers have such great camouflage.
I'm thinking the vertical lines will help me move through areas easier in stalking situations.

I tried thinking of something black in the deer woods and all I could come up with was dirt. Maybe bark/scarring on an aspen. You get the point though.
Idk why ASAT and predator use thick solid black lines. Id rather it be dark brown or dark gray. I painted most of the black lines on my leafy ASAT tan and light green.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I have had some very cool experiences on the ground while hunting in a ghillie suit. Birds landing on me, deer extremely close under 3 yards, squirrels crawling over my legs u name it. Important thing for me was back cover and have something that holds your bow up so u just have to draw. My bow now is to long to shoot from the sitting position but I do miss it, really enjoyable way to hunt.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
first lite cypher camo kryptek camo and water fowl camo all blend in real good. i go with the multi dimension blending patters myself im not a mossyrealtree guy the printed patterns tend to turn into a dark blob at distances.

That color of that jacket does really blend in well with that background in that picture lockdown. Also good point on not much being black out in the deer woods, not sure why I had it in my head to do black stripes, maybe because that is what some of those other camo companies do. I agree Ghoasthunter at a distance realtree, mossy oak, etc looks like somebody is wearing black clothing when looking at them at a distance.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I like the looks of Kryptek's highlander camo, and the US desert camo, for cattail hunting. I own neither, but they both look like they would match well.
I use whatever is cheap, and stay still. Fred Bear killed many many animal's in a plaid shirt or old WWII camo jacket.

Re: Ground Hunting Camo
I think a lot of folks get confused on how Camo works. It's being skylighted and moving that screws the pooch. I've squirrel hunted for many of years now and there not wearing new age Camo and they have an orange belly. If there not flicken there tail around u will walk right by.
Also every study I have seen on deers vision was funded to sell u something. Most recent years there ability to see uv but don't worry for 19.95 we've got that covered. Think about this thousands of deer fall victim at close range to hunters decked out from head to toe in blaze orange, how could this be? These are just my opinions but I've killed what I consider a good deer inside of ten yards in my work clothes which is a dark blue uniform and let many more pass.
