Proof of the Upper 1/3

Unread postby Ryan » Mon Jan 23, 2017 1:39 pm

My new house sits almost perfectly at the upper 1/3 elevation on a WNC mountain near the Pisgah national forest, and it has been amazing to me the amount of deer travel that comes right by the house. On a day with the wind blowing from sw over the ridge top I see anywhere from 2-8 deer traveling that elevation line, some even walking up my driveway to browse on some shrub trees. So far I've seen a decent 8 (I would say in the 110" range-pretty good for wnc mountains), a bunch of spikes and a bunch of doe. I'll start adding pictures and a moc map of time/wind I see them pass by.

8-)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Only a true hunting beast would build his house on the top 1/3 of a leeward ridge! Cool observations.

You are very lucky to be able to observe that every day. I am in a similar situation. My house sits where I can look out windows and observe several terrain features including military crests like that and a couple ridge saddles. I have learned so much just watching the wild critters in the 3 years I have owned the place. Every day I am around in daylight, or even at night with a good set of binoculars, snow on the ground and a full moon, its like I am sitting an observation stand. When I see something really interesting I jot it down with what the conditions were. I know it has helped my hunting a ton already.

I don't get much sleep around the full moon when there is snow on the ground these days. I sit by the windows in the dark with my binos for hours. Drives my wife nuts

Be very thankful for that man many hunters live in a lot less favorable environments!

Now you just need to set up the "right" deer stand.
