WV Bowhunter

Unread postby WV Bowhunter » Mon Jan 02, 2017 12:57 pm

Since I'm new here I thought I'd post a few of my better bucks I've shot through the few years. I'm overwhelmed with all the information on this site and realize after just a little bit of reading that I've screwed up a bunch over the years and now I can see some of the reasons why. I hunt on our farm here in WV and hunt mostly public land in Ohio although I do have a couple farms of private that I can hunt in Oh, but I think they see more pressure than the public. I can't wait to find some actual beds and put plans in place to try to knock down some big bucks.

This was my first decent buck off of public land in Ohio.

My best buck I've taken, public land in Ohio. Shot him with my mz at 20 yds

Thanks!! i hunt almost exclusively hill country areas. I started hunting pretty young and killed my first buck when I was 9. I always wanted to shoot a big buck but could never lay off shooting the first basket racked 8 pt I could find. I went on a bear hunt in 2006 and shot a nice one I wanted to get mounted. I found a reasonable priced taxi and took him my bear. While there he showed me a pretty impressive wall of bucks that he had shot over his lifetime. He told me he hunted public land and said I could tag along the next fall. I walked some of the area shed hunting that winter and started hunting that public that fall. On my first set I saw one of the biggest bucks of my life and I was hooked on big deer.

I always tried to find doe bedding areas and hunt the downwind side during the rut or travel corridors like a low gap in a ridge. i have had mixed results with this technique, got lucky a few times but I spent a lot of hours in the tree for most of them.

Now with a wife and 3 kids my tree time is limited to what it used to be. I'm glad I found this site so maybe I can hunt specific deer on certain winds and optimize my hunting time.
