MASS 7 point down

Unread postby Huntoholic » Mon Dec 19, 2016 2:59 am

The last two years I've been stationed in Japan unable to hunt so I was doing the next best thing, reading every thread on the beast, watching Dans DVDs, listening to Marios podcast, and lots and lots of cyber scouting. Thank you too everyone on the beast I've learned so much from you all and it already payed off on my second hunt. The spot I got this guy from was over a mile hike ack down in this valley full of swamps and beaver ponds and lots of classic swamp bedding. Being 7000 miles away I was never able to put boots on the ground to confirm and bedding but the trails from the ariels told me they had to be close. It was Tuesday December 13th and I left the truck about 1000 and stared hiking back t had just snowed the two days prior and it sounded like I was walking on corn flakes. Once I got 300 yards away from my intended destination I put on the rest of my warming layers and took about an hour and a half to creep those last few hundred yards. I was a little disappointed when I got there because I couldn't see into the suspected bedding area like I had hoped but decided to set up since it was too loud to creep any closer. The sit was uneventful til about the last five minutes of light out of nowhere I see this guy cruising down the trail on a mission my shooting windows were small and and he was down wind of me so I took the shot opting not to stop him and I MISSED! Lucky for me he ran right towards me after the shot and stood the while I quietly reloaded my muzzleloader. Then as he was facing away from me at 20 yards I dropped him with I spine shot and he died within seconds. The fun then began I had over a mile to go and several hundred feet of elevation to climb. Lucky for me my Dad was more than excited to make the 1.5 hour journey from NH to help me drag him out. Hopefully I can pay him back in the coming week and put him on some deer. The buck was a seven point with a busted off G2 and a cracked main beam, he had a 16.5 inch spread and weighed in at 144. I'm guessing he's a 2.5 or 3.5, hard to tell.
