I added the dark patch that muddy suggested and a glossy clear coat. The hair drier trick appears to have worked so far. I think the last thing I'll do is swap the rubber beard for one made of black paint brush bristles.
I'll post the colors I used a little later. I'm at a Subway right now on my way up north for sturgeon fishing.
