November 2016

Unread postby mattyq2402 » Mon Apr 11, 2016 8:00 am

I'm curious on everyone's thoughts for this November. I have hunted 5-11 the last couple years in SE Ohio. This year I was looking to go either 1st week or 13-18. The full moon falls on 13th, anyone have good or bad experience hunting around the full moon?

As far as "more mature" bucks, (regardless of moon phase) in SE Ohio I see the largest bucks on their feet during daylight hours during the later ....16-21 of Nov

First week I always see more bucks, but mostly 2.5 year olds.

Ive been taking the first week of November off in Central Illinois the last 3 years and like was just said, I see a lot of 2.5 year old bucks. This year I'm trying the second week, the last couple years we have most of our big buck pics in daylight during that second week. Plus, the weather is a bit colder the later in November you go.

I hunt southern Michigan close to the Ohio border. I see the most rutting first week of November like said mostly young bucks. I've seen most of my true mature bucks nov9 -nov14. Our gun season starts the 15th so I would probably see more if it wasn't for that. I've had really good luck during mornings around a full moon

The second week of November seems to be more productive.

Hunt KS every year 5 - 19 -- try to get the best of both times. The most productive times are 5-10 and 15-19. See a lot of slow days in between. The biggest issue is the earlier you go, the more chance you have of warm weather.

I see the same exact thing. I prefer the 2nd week for sure.

I have seen it both ways - but over the years the second weeks seems to produce more big buck sightings. I actually think the late season over bean fields can be the best time for mature bucks in Ohio - I just can't take that kind of cold anymore

I agree the 2nd and 3rd weeks are best for mature bucks. The gun season usually opens here the Monday after thanksgiving and I have seen allot of giant bucks chasing during our gun season. I feel like you will see less bucks the 2nd and 3rd week of November but they will be the quality you are looking for.

I'm not one to promote websites or whatever but I think W2H nailed it pretty good with this article on November 2016. IMHO.

If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

So I listened to a w2h podcast which brought me to this ?, mark Drury mentions movement will be likely mornings on the 3-4 days after the full moon and afternoon on 3-4 days prior. I'm not sure if this only refers to rise and fall times but looks like u could get movement both periods around the 13th this November. I'm curious what the red moon times will show this year. I likely will stick with 5-11 unless I hear any groundbreaking thoughts that would steer me otherwise. My daughter's bday is the 12th so I either go week before or after.

i don't know when your peak rut date is but I would choose to go a week after peak. my second choice would be a week before peak. during the peak, all the big bucks will be locked up on does. I would rather be in the woods when they are looking.

My favorite days are Oct 26 - Nov 4. I find that my mature bucks are usually still on their patterns, but are moving more often, and usually more often in daylight. Any time after that, I start to see some major variations in their patterns and routines as the breeding game really gears up and with those variations come less consistency and a better chance of random behavior - with some random other hunter killing my target in a somewhat random area potentially.

X2 hunt them in there beds before they lock up. They start leaving there beds early enough to give you enough daylight to get it done. I still do the funnels in the the a.m. and down wind of doe bedding. But outside of a bed has been my best luck
