Question about when to hang a stand.

Unread postby Bionic » Sat Sep 12, 2015 3:04 am

Hello everyone,

I hunt thick forest with little to no pressure. Typically i would hang a treestand the week before season opener. This year I am researching as much as possible in hopes of getting a mature large antlered buck, and do not want to continue what I have been doing for the past 15 yrs since it took that long to see a mature buck to harvest....

I use a climber, and typically hunt one spot, my home is 300' off the road, and my tree i hunt in is roughly another 500' behind the house, this is all on a 160 acre chunk off forest without houses to the nearest road.

I was thinking about hanging my stand tomorrow(Sept 12), and Oct 1st is bow opener. Would that be a good idea, or would sneaking it out on the opening day be better since deer wont see the stand for 3 weeks until opening day?

I have the Hill Country DVD being shipped as we speak, looking forward to learning more, and more.

Thank you in advance

hang it the day you are going to hunt it. you will get your scent in there now if you do it. Hang and hunt the same day.

Yup. Hang and hunt immediately. First time in is by far your best chance to kill a buck. Any intrusion before and your odds drastically drop.

Agree with everyone above, don't hang until you are actually going to hunt. Also, how long have you been hunting that same spot? Deer will purposely avoid spots that you hunt year after year, hunt after hunt. Try changing up the spot, go 40 or 50 yards downwind of your usual tree for a hunt or 2. Try some completely new places. If you want to see more mature bucks this is my suggestions. Mature bucks will avoid spots that you use every year because they are smart, they didn't get to the mature status just by chance. Good luck this season!

Thanks everyone for the input, i will just bring my stand with me on the first hunt. Do you guys leave your stand if you're hunting 2 days in a row?

Also, if I walk around back in the hunting area this weekend, will that have negative impacts for me on opening day(oct first)? Obviously, i realize its best to stay out, but in 2.5-3weeks will the woods return to normal?

A mature buck will not tolerate you being in there at all. If your target is mature bucks, then I would not go in there outside of hunting season, except for in spring if you are scouting or prepping trees. Then, stay out until season. If you're targeting does, then depending on the lay of the land, going in now may or may not affect your results. I can go into one property a lot and still have does around. Some properties get blown out after going in once.

Re: your question about sitting a second time....I only do that with rut stands. Before rut, I hunt a spot once and move along. They'll smell you were there after you are gone, and very few mature bucks will tolerate that.

Ok, i will stay out until hunting. I have 4 cameras i placed out last Sunday, i havent been in there since, so if i happen to hunt near them, I'll remove them or swap a different card then.

I do usually sit in one spot each year, for the past 3 seasons. The buck i got last year, I'm thinking was a wanderer during rut. He just trotted through, he never showed up on any trail cams.

Virtually all the hunters here are strictly big buck hunters. That changes the normal way of picking spots, hanging stands etc and your new dvd will show some great information. Whether you go "beast" style only or something mixed with prior experience is up to you.
Welcome and happy hunting.

Good point, I can't wait to watch that DVD, it sounds extremely informative. I am very fortunate to have a great area to hunt, and I can't wait to learn the information from the DVD.

I really appreciate all the info, and tips all of you pointed out, thank you so much.

I would like to post a topo map for members to give input on, I have done enough scouting to pick a few areas i believe would be the places to hunt, so posting a topo map, and hearing suggested areas to sit, would be good to see if I am on the right track.

Welcome! One of the main things that is pointed out in the DVDs is to only hunt a spot a few times a year. With 160 ac. It might help if you mixed up some of your hunts with public to allow you to keep hunting, but also give your private ground some rest. If I had 160 ac to hunt I would be systematic and random, keeping the deer guessing by changing entry and exit routes and going deeper into the property each hunt. Good luck and happy huntin!

Like the others have said...this forum is a bit different...

The majority of us aren't DEER hunters...we hunt DEER..but most of us are after mature bucks. Or like in my case...learning to hunt mature bucks..

We hunt very differently than most hunters...most hunters think we are nuts...

Look at some of the walls of many of the guys here and you'll soon realize where the proof lies...

Many of us rarely hunt the same woods more than once or twice a season...we hunt mostly public land..we scout more than we hunt...and we don't go anywhere near the deer killing areas till its time to kill em...

Many of us do run cameras but its out on destination food sources...not in their home areas they live and where we will hunt them where they are easily spooked...

I stumbled into this way of hunting because I have an attention span of a toddler...and I am like a toddler...I ask questions which many "adults" do not...many people go through life in a hurry..but get never paying attention or questioning anything...many ofnus the opposite..

My first year archery hunting I did the same tree thing most the season...I didn't see much of anything...I'd hunt the same tree atleast a few times a week...deer blew at me nearly every sit...

I started getting bored with that and set out with a stand on my back and when I hit hot sign I'd climb a tree...or I'd go into areas I knew held deer and climb a tree and hunt...I found quickly that I seen more deer the first time I hunted an area than any other time...

I'm FAR from a pro...actually been away from archery hunting a long while for the most part...stumbling into this place has been a game changer...the videos are huge...even if you never hunt a Marsh I recommend that video too...(and if you're like me you will go find a Marsh to hunt) lol.

Good luck....its a different way of going about things...and like I said many think it's absolutely crazy....but I love it...

I'll check out that link to that other thread. Thanks for taking the time to post it, I appreciate it.

Mauser-unreal, people get so set in there ways, and want people to think they are the best of the best. I can't wait for the hill country DVD to arrive, because I want to learn. People are to arrogant sometimes.
