The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation had a bull elk skeleton fully mounted (complete with 5 point rack). There was an egg shaped opening in the front of the ribcage. It was about 6" across. This is where the wind pipe and arteries from the head go through of course. Remember an average bull is 2.5 to 3 times bigger than the average whitetail buck. I have friends kill bulls with this shot taken from close range. I personally hit one too high trying this shot. I recovered the bull but he went 250- 300 yards. With very little blood. I mainly followed tracks and in about the last 75 yards he started to drool excessively. I feel a little lucky I found him.

I wouldn't take the front on shot from a tree but at close range on the ground I would not hesitate to take it, I have seen a lot of video's just like this where they go down fast!

That shot looks more in the neck than the chest to me?

I shot a deer in the chest once from a tree. No exit and no blood trail. From an elevated position not a good idea. On the ground at close range makes it a much more lethal shot.

From an elevated position the aiming point should be positioned so the arrow exits the opposite side front arm pit. You slide the arrow between the neck and should. The deer should be quartering to you. I've killed 4 deer with this exact shot and have watched them all die from the tree. One was a 200+ pound north woods Wisconsin buck. Shooting slick tricks.
We've had this convo before here...some like it some don't. I have no reason not to take that shot

First - that is an awesome vid :D

Just so everyone understands a frontal shot on an elk is very different than a frontal shot on a deer.

The opening in the front of the rib cage on a bull is maybe 8" tall by 5" wide. The front opening on a big midwest whitetail buck is half that size. Also, I am no elk hunting expert, having only killed a couple of the critters, but all my research says elk do not usually jump the string like a whitetail can. As any experienced hunter knows if a deer is alert and looking at you watch out.

I am not anti-frontal shot, you just need to know what you are getting into. You have to be quite skilled to consistently make frontal shots on whitetails. Based on all the stories I hear I bet three quarters of attempted frontal shots result in lost deer...so there is some learning to be had in the hunting community.
