Hi everybody,
This was my first season hunting and while I got lucky a couple times im looking to get better at my skills. This winter is my first time out actually scouting for deer instead of going in blind. After reading through the forums I think I have a good idea on what to look for. This site is awesome for someone like me. Nobody in my family or friends hunt so everything I learn has come on line. I hunt in the mountains of Virginia that has big woods and then mountain laurel. Acorns are everywhere and every dent in the mountain seems like a bed. The only way to really get close is to come down from the top but even then you're crushin leaves all the way to a tree. I made a couple of maps off caltopo and google earth and have a couple paths i walked that im going to try to post. Any help is appreciated.

The areas you have marked look good... They will bed in these locations mainly with the wind blowing down the mountain, so you have to find set ups that work with those winds.

Dan this website is great thank you and other experienced hunters for sharing your knowledge. So if they would bed there with the wind blowing down the mountain would the grey path work as access to the blue stands? I cant come up from the bottom because it is private land outside the red outline. I went out and walked it and the points with the solid green had rubs on every other tree, acorns everywhere and laurel on one side or the other.

I think your access should work... I would try to keep my scent from blowing to them, but if you have to cross over, do it from as far away as possible and allow for time to settle. If others walk the top frequently, it might be a non-issue.

I don't want to make it to complex... Just think like this, if there is a way to set up on them with your wind never getting to them, and other variables not exposing you (noise, sight,) try to use that access...
