First Beast style scouting trip for the 2015 season

Unread postby Debo03 » Tue Jan 13, 2015 5:25 am

I was somewhat successful with my first Beast Style Scouting trip this past weekend. The season just ended here in TN so I decided to get out and put the boots to the ground, hopefully locating some buck beds to hunt next year.

Found this bed off the side of a point, is this a common location for a buck bed? (the topo shows the location of the bed)
The ridge it's located on has a logging road running right down the center and all the way out the point to the bottom which would hinder bedding directly on the point which is common for a lot of the ridges on my property.

There were some small rubs right around the bed but no big trees near by, but a few of these were located just on the opposite side of the hill.

The ridge runs North to South with this bed being on the East side of the hill/point. I'm assuming a buck would bed here with a west wind.. I will probably have to approach from the North so what wind would you guys look for to hunt this bed?

You are right on. I would want a W or WNW wind and setup where that draw is just to the N. That bed is right where it should be, setup for a W-NW wind and on the steeper side of the point.
No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.

Thanks Pamettokid! That's exactly the approach I was expecting it's just good to hear guys with more experience than I say exactly what I was already thinking.

Fairly typical west wind bed.

Just want to make sure, on the topo map North is pointing to the bottom right hand corner, correct?

That's correct. I took a screen shot of my phone with the map following the direction that I was looking.

Here is a picture of the same ridge if it were oriented correctly. North is the top.
