flambeau river state forest

Unread postby buckhunter31 » Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:53 pm

I am planning on going to the flambeau river state forest this weeknd to do some muzzleloading. I am just wondering if anybody has hunted up there this year and had any luck. This is my first time going up there to hunt. We have a cabin by winter so that is were i will be doing my hunting. Then i am wondering how do you hunt the big woods whitetail this time of year? I think if i can find some logging going on I should be able to see some deer. This is my first time posting anything. This is a cool site. Thanks

Welcome to the BEAST 8-)
Hopefully you got snow up there?
Deer are going to be hiding where ever they recieved the least pressure from gun hunting. If there is snow I would drive some of the back roads looking for deer tracks with a lack of human sign and get on a track till you find a good area... If you have a topo of the area post it and I will see if anything stands out.

Logging would be a good place to start....mainly 3 to 6 year old cuts that are isolated, thick and hard to access. GOOD LUCK!!!

I hunted that area several years...shot my first buck up there. Lots of territory to cover up there and if you aren't afraid to get off the beaten path, you should have good luck. The farther in you go, the better your luck will be. You'll find the average hunter up there wants to stay on the logging trails and not go in off the roads very far.
I hunted the area between Lake of the Pines and Phillips. I know...that's a pretty big area, but I jumped around alot to avoid pressure. Still ran into alot of creeps out there though and eventually quit hunting up there because it was getting kind of touchy...being a single female out there alone in the woods. I had some scary things happen and decided to hunt closer to home and on private lands instead.
Good luck up there.

Take Dan's advice....find a track and follow it. That will tell you more about what is happening and where the deer are at than anything else right now...pray for snow!

PLH
Go farther, stay longer.........hunt harder.
