Liver shot?****Pictures added of a dandy buck.****

Unread postby JROD157 » Mon Oct 27, 2014 5:30 am

This morning i arrowed a P&Y buck. I am certain it was a liver shot. I recorded everything i witnessed after the shot.

I heard a "thoomp" not a thwack
He jumped like a mule kick but his legs stayed tucked under.
He ran 40yds and stopped and that was the last spot i saw him.
My arrow is covered in dark red blood and there was immediate good blood.
One of my fletchings was torn (chipped off) which tells me i hit a rib on the pass through.
after waiting 3hours on stand i dropped into a creek and snuck off my property without tracking or disturbing anything.
I am thinking i will give him 8 hours. I have access to a tracking dog. Should i use it?
What are your guys thoughts? Comments, advice?

He will be laying right close to where you last saw him. Looking forward to pics soon.

Great choice on backing right out.

Won't need a dog. He will be dead in first bed. You did everything right!

This is a great example of someone doing everything right after a less than ideal shot. I expect we will be looking at pics soon.

He was bedded and dead in the last spot I saw him. He went 40yds and laid down.

Lessons learned:
A heart shot deer does not always mule kick, die on the run or fall (it bedded down), even provide you the nice thwack sound we are all looking for. Heart blood coating an arrow with a fat buck can sometimes have fat deposits on the arrow.
And lastly, when you put in the time and have confidence in your skills don't second guess yourself because it didn't happen the way it did all the other times.
The cautious approach was reassuring for all the details I witnessed but wasn't necessary. If i had to do it all over, i would still handle it the same way minus second guessing my skills.
Turns out my "liver shot" got all the goodies and this buck responded like no heart hit deer i have ever shot.
Can't thank you guys enough for the positive feedback after the shot.
Now tell me how to post a pic so i can show him to you.

I shot a big buck thru the heart a couple years ago and he ran back to the bed he had come from and laid back down before dying... It was a surprise to me too.
