Not what I wanted to find scouting today!!

Unread postby Dewey » Sat Mar 30, 2013 9:52 am

Just found this shedded buck dead in his bed on the leeward side off the point of a high ridge. Looks to be a 3 year old and is fairly fresh probably within the last few days or so. Can't find any visible wounds on his body but he had blood coming out of the mouth. Not sure what happened and thinking maybe got tagged by a car and had internal damage since one side of the ribcage seemed kinda soft.

This really stinks because I cyber scouted this spot and exactly where I expected to find a buck bed there he layed dead. What are the odds! :?

This is exactly how he was laying when I came upon him.

Flipped him over and no visible injuries!

I usually find one or two dead from the winter. Never is good to see.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Looks like a day or two old. Surprised the 'yotes didn't pick at him yet. That might be a good thing though.

Do you guys think it would help another buck take over sooner if it were to be pulled away from that bed? Just thinking. Bummer for sure!

That stinks Dewey! Be cool if you could find the sheds.
On a positive note, your cyber scouting was right on the money!

Finding the sheds would be cool. Walked all day and never found one but there is still way too much snow. I will look again in a few weeks.

Been awhile since I did a hill country scout and wish it didn't have to end up like this with a dead deer. Still a productive day and found some other spots to try in the fall.

Here are some pics of the ridge I found him on. Not great pics but give you an idea of the lay of the land. If he did get hit by a car the closest road is about a 1/2 mile away.

I thought about dragging him out of there but figured I will just let nature take it's course where he layed. Almost thought about contacting the DNR to get a recovery tag for the meat but without knowing what exactly killed the buck thought it might not be a good idea. He looked healthy but never know if it was indeed a vehicle or if he died from some type of sickness.

That's a bummer Dewey, but at least there is a good chance the spot will produce in the future.

Funny thing is I have never seen a yote in this general area which I find odd. There was plenty of snow on the ground Friday and never even seen a track from one. :?

Well, that's great for the recruitment of new fawns in your area! Wish I could saw the same. :angry-tappingfoot: I only got 2 this winter. I won't tell you how many I missed...
