when are the Milkweeds ready ?
Anybody know when you can start checking the milkweed plants for picking the little floating seeds ? Dan uses them on his video's, but it got me thinking I want to collect some of them for this year hunting, but I have no idea when they turn over to those floating seeds ? I'm guessing after it freezes maybe, but I have no idea... anybody ?

I normally don't see them drying down til just before season opens (around the middle of Sept. or later).

ok, thanks for the heads up guys... I just don't want to miss it when they are ready is all... The milkweed seeds seem like such a better way to go, rather than those puff bottles...

Re: when are the Milkweeds ready ?
I looked at some last week. The pods were big and full size. The white fluffy stuff was developed, but damp. And the seeds weren't brown yet. I'm going to check them again this weekend. I'm sure if you picked them anytime now, and dehydrated them you will be fine. I'll update tomorrow when I check.
A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

I like to get them just before they crack open naturally. I get them a little green, and dry them in a paperbag, in the sun. Don't put them in plastic until they are totally dry.

Just out of curiosity, anybody pull the seeds off cattails and use them when you don't have milkweeds?

Yes... They don't work as well. They seem to need more air current to hold it air born

It looks ready to me... Its not fully developed, but I don't think that matters.
Go ahead and pick some green.
Take a knife and cut a slit thru the skin...
If you pry it apart you should be able to see the seeds.
I put mine on my dash board till the seeds start separating, and then put in a baggy, but like someone said, don't seal the bag till completely dry.
Should take about a week... I will post a pick once ready.

Re: when are the Milkweeds ready ?
I like to get them early anyway so when I open them up it's easier to remove the seeds.

Re: when are the Milkweeds ready ?
Ok guys.... I found some milkweed pods today, infact I picked 22 of them... Now, my question is, is that enough, not enough ? Do you only get like one seed out of each pod, or is there a bunch in each one or what ? I know where they are now, so I can go back for more if I need to...
I was just driving home from checking my cameras and I thought I saw some of those plants in the ditch line, so I stopped and sure enough, they were loaded with those pods, so I started picking... Can't wait to try them out, it's only 3 weeks away !

22 Pods will last you about 6 years
Really, I think I go through about a pod a month. There are thousands of seeds in each.

They are kind of addicting. I pull out a few and watch them go then I want to keep doing it!
I guess I spend too much time in a tree!
