Early Goose - Sept 1, 2010

Unread postby Sam Ubl » Sat Aug 28, 2010 1:41 am

Wednesday, September 1st, is nearly here and I'm ready for it - are you? This is a great time of year we're drawing nearer to - Autumn. The air smells the freshest, the air is crisp but comfortable and it's the only time of year that sportsmen/women can enjoy the woods AND water depending on their mood.

I'm still in fishing mode, and although I've been busy setting stands, placing cameras and scouting, the greenery and heat during the days just haven't spoken, "Time to go deer hunting" to me yet.

Now, with only 5 days to go as I write this before guns are blazing on my home lake, Phantom Lake, in Mukwonago, I sit here completely pumped.

So what's your plan? Mine is to have several buddies over on Friday night, the 3rd day into the early goose season, and grill some venison, trap some turtles off my shoreline and talk about our early morning goose hunt tomorrow as we prepare for lift off when the geese leave the water for the fields.

Who's on my page?

I used to do quite a bit of goose hunting, but whitetails have taken center stage for me. Still have decoys and gear. Kind of miss it though. Good luck on opening day, Sam.

Thank you sir. I'm much the same as you, but since I've moved onto the lake and watched those little buggers eat my grass seed... Kidding, what it boils down to is in my last 7 or 8 years, I've really detatched to the outdoorsmen I once was. Where I used to fish any water for any specie, I now focus 90% of my effort on musky. Where I used to hunt small game, sit open fields in the darkness with a red lense looking for yotes, and wade through the marsh, jump shoot in small rivers, etc, etc, etc... I now focus on bowhunting.

It's a time thing, ya know? Limited time tends to force a bit of an ultimatum. Well, that's something I can't let happen anymore because it's becoming evident I've been losing more and more of what I was and I'm not comfortable with it. This year I got serious about turkey hunting like I used to, I turtle trapped, I'm going to duck hunt more than opening day and I of course will be taking to the tree stand as always.

Long story, but I know all too well where you're coming from... I think it's part of why I'm so jacked for goose. Thanks for the luck!!

Pretty much hit the nail on the head, Sam. If I had more time, no wife and kids. I'm sure I'd be heading out opening morning as well. I'm only allowed so much time to hunt, It's a game of give and take. I'll have to ask the kids if they want to try it, then I can use them as an excuse to go.

Yes Im taking off work Wed, sept 1st for our opening of early goose and dove starts at 12pm same day. Ive got 3 spots scouted all with no less than 20 geese there everyday, Ill post a pic Thursday. I am a hardcore duckhunter the past 4 years, but now Im going back to deer hunting a lot like I used to. Ive seen some HUGE bucks while duckhunting, Ive personally jumped out 2 big NT's....which is why I began researching buck beds, swamp & marsh hunting which led me to Dans movies, and this site. Ive never been so pumped for deer season since a kid on opening day of shotgun. This is the 1st year I wont be hunting 'deer'... ill be hunting BUCKS until 3rd split of duck then I duck hunt almost everyday. Im also a turkey hunting fanatic, something about feathers defintely got me good, but nothing bets a huge bonehead buck coming in.

Nice Brandon - good luck.

Funny, I have a banded goose who's proclaimed my yard as his new home. He slept under my car till' I woke him this morning. . . not sure why he doesn't fly, his wings sit right, but maybe the injury is inconspicuous, or maybe it's sick. Either way, hope I don't befriend him in the next two days cause he's getting a muzzy Wednesday morning before i leave for work if he sticks around.

You got him! LOL

My opening day sucked! Went to my favorite spot where there was 52 coming into a pond for atleast 3 days in a row anwhere from 730-11. Stayed until 11 baked in the sun for almost 5 hours!! no geese!! i am at a loss for words, but thats hunting i guess. watched doves fly around all over the farm all morning while waiting on geese because the season doesnt come in until 12pm... well long story short at 12 pm is was 100 degrees and the doves had left...

Ive never been skunked on opening day of early goose especially after all the scouting i did! shoulda went somewhere else i guess... ill try again Monday.

Muzzy 100 grain did the trick. I felt bad for him - he was dealing with an eye missing, which I'm not sure why, but imagine to be the reason why he never flew. When I picked him up he weighed next to nothing and when I breasted him, his breasts were thinner than a chickens, so he must have been starving. I think I did him a favor and that's the only reason I dispatched him.

Bass tourney guys reported 4 groups hunting last night with a little shooting - I didn't hear any of it. Saturday morning i have 4 buddies joining me for geese and doves. I think my best bet is a last minute approval from landowner to hunt a cut hay field they sit in every morning. They lift off the lake and land in the field, but I don't know where they are on the lake in the early a.m., so I'm afraid I'll have to see them in the moonlight and set up on them if I don't get to hunt the field. We'll see.

I heard some shooting last evening by my house, someone got some action. I've been seeing quite a few small groups flying around here (Green Bay). Sam, pretty nice when the first one of the year has a band. I never got one in my 10 years of hunting geese.

ok got revenge on the no-shows from opening day...

me and my buddy ended up with 5 geese, not bad since it was only 1 flock, 2 gray foxes... they where everywhere in the soybeans coming out into a cut field by a pond we were on the edge of. 1 crow and 4 doves to round out the afternoon. Pretty hot, about 90 by 10am... im ready for fall!

What an awesome Saturday morning. Half of the gents showed up to my house for an evening hunt on the water while I was away at a wedding Friday evening, and they ended up with a single bird, but a banded bird at that.

Saturday morning came quick with the alarm sounding at 3:40. Right to the kitchen I went and waited for the boys to rise with the smell of bacon looming. As Mark (my brother inlaw) and Ben came downstairs to have their cofee, framiliar voices echoed from the attached garage. Soon James and Joe were walking through the door at 4:15 am to join for breakfast. Eggs, bacon and goose strips did the trick.

A short 200 yard walk up the road and we were in the fresh cut winter wheat field the birds had been frequenting every morning/evening for the last couple weeks. I had luckily secured permission for the group just two days prior and we were in for a treat.

With 15 full bodied decoys set, we lay amongst them on our backs covered with gillie netting with wheat on top of the netting. As the sun rose, so did the geese from the water and soon they were landing all around us. This was one of the neatest hunts i think I can remember as the 5 of us lay still and silent until a large flock came in to join the party.

At the right moment, one of us yelled, "NOW!!" and we all did an n'sync sit-up,throwing the netting from our faces and torsoe and blasting ensued. It's hard to describe the maylay of birds - where does one aim. Many birds dropped and the rest is history. I'll never forget how cool it was to see the explosion of wheat in the air as it flew off the netting when we all simultaneously sat up to loose our cannon's. What a neat hunt, what a great memory.

Hopefully one of the boys will shoot me an email with some pics from our morning.
