BURNETT (AP) — A hunter who became stranded on an island in the Horicon Marsh has been found safe.
The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says 75-year-old Donald Schlegel was hunting alone on islands in the marsh in the town of Burnett when he was unable to locate his boat. Deputies say the Horicon man had no way of calling for help and no survival equipment, except for a small flashlight.
When Schlegel failed to return home, his family found his empty truck at a boat landing and called authorities.
In steady rain and falling temperatures, deputies spotted the dim light of Schlegel’s flashlight about 8 p.m. Schlegel wasn’t hurt.

Re: Lost hunter in Horicon Marsh
A couple summers ago I went out to knock down some cattails to make shooting lanes. I think I spent about an hour slogging though the cattails in 95 degree temps looking for the canoe on my way back. Now I make sure to mark it with gps, and drag the canoe in a ways so that I have a trial that leads to the canoe.

I've misplaced my canoe a time or two, so easy in the dark.

Re: Lost hunter in Horicon Marsh
I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. It is easy to get turned around in the cattails in the dark. Alwsys a good idea to carry a GPS and a compass.
Glad he is okay. I hope I can hunt the islands when I'm in my 70's. It is not easy.

Re: Lost hunter in Horicon Marsh
Years ago I got lost in a white-out on a 10,000 lake. Three and a half hours,on foot. it lifted as it was getting dark.... The forecast for light flurries turned into big heavy wet flakes. I was soaked from the outside-in from the snow, and from the inside-out from sweat.
Kind'a scary. I bought my first GPS the next day. I keep a cheap etrex (bought used for $40) in my hunting backpack. My icefishing gear has at least one GPS and spare batteries, as well as a compass....I'm in good shape and not quite 50. At his age he must have really been worrying. Family too.

Re: Lost hunter in Horicon Marsh
I'm glad the guy wasn't hurt. Yeap in some of that public land stuff it's easy to get lost. Especially when you have to walk in 6 ft hight cain.
