Dad arrowed a nice one!

Unread postby RaisedByWolves » Tue Oct 30, 2012 12:51 am

So 5am saturday morning when I woke up in North Dakota I had a text message from my dad saying "Going to go sit in your stand and kill Mr. ODL" So I replied good luck and shoot straight. No one had set foot on this property since spring turkey hunting, no cameras-nothing. Its about an hour and 45 minute drive so that helps. We always just assume there are good deer around.

Anyways, I packed up all my things from my duck hunt in ND and started the 12 hour drive back to WI when dad text's me again. "Just smoked a big buck. Watched him stagger and tip over in the field" All of us riding back in my truck were pumped...here we have this long drive back and now we have someone to root for and occupy the long ride back. He gave the buck a little time I think just to savor the moment and started sending out pics shortly after that titled Just shot Mr. Outdoor Life! - I'm like oh thats what Mr. ODL means haha

The buck came into his stand right at first light from a bean field, my dad figured he was on his way down the ridge top to freshen some scrapes he had going. When the buck got to 18 yards it heard dad's jacket against the hickory bark and snapped its head up. Dad was afraid he was going to bolt and felt confident with the quartering-to shot so he let it fly. The arrow ended up entering his neck and exiting just behind the opposite shoulder, went about 60 yards with blood everywhere. The buck is Dad's biggest ever, a main frame 10 with a split g2 on the right side giving him 11 scorable, he also is trying to split his right brow tine and has a nice sticker starting on his left base. 17" inside spread. Good solid 3.5 year old. I figure he will gross in the mid 130's. Congrats Dad!-even if you did it out of my stand 8-)

Congrats to you & your Dad! Looks bigger than 130's to me, but then again, I'm not very good at scoring deer.

Congrats to your dad. Real good looking buck.

Not a ton of mass but good tine length......I'm no expert by any means but as long as we are guessing I'll say low 140's for a gross. Let's say 141".

Great looking deer no matter what it scores.
