Other succesful methods besides Beast style
I've seen a little talk lately about hunting beast style not being the best method for some people. So if you don't hunt bedding areas and are consistantley succesfull share some of your tactics. Keep rut techniques out to compare apples to apples. Also include the hunting pressure and deer populations of the areas so we can see how this could help other people with similar situations.

Define what you percieve "beast" style to be.

Re: Other succesful methods besides Beast style
I think most if not all hunt bedding areas but some arent as aggresive as others for some reason or another. If your talking private high volume deer amounts with low pressure the dreaded S word works. But weve been down that road already with nothing more to be gained.

Re: Other succesful methods besides Beast style
Well that is a tough one to answer. A lot will depend on the quality of your property and the pressure it receives. Quantity of acerage is the least important if the other two are in check. Here is the deal....you only have three options really....Food, Water, Bedding. The first step is diagnose the most limiting factor of the three aforementioned resources and try and take advantage of it or by improving the weakest link. Regardless of how comfortable you are getting super close to the bedding your entire season hinges on that knowledge of where he beds.
We have an animal that once he reaches 3 1/2 years or older spends about 70% of his life on his belly outside of the rut. 20% of the remaining 30% is in the safety of his core area during daylight hours which is most often considerably less than a 200 yard radius. So from the get go you have about a 10% chance of killing a mature deer...IF he beds on your property and not the neighbors.
To me hunting Beast style doesn't mean that you have to be within 50 yards of your bedded buck. Everyone is at a different level and the quality of his bed will often give an advantage to him that you can't get that close anyway. Hunting Beast style is basically hunting on purpose, this is accomplished by gathering the most intel you can about your property and the animals that call it home in the off season.
If you are hunting food sources.....You need to know where that buck beds, when he beds there and how he accesses that food source and what the preferrable food source is at any point during the year. Same thing with water. Beast style isn't necessarily hunting bedding areas exclusively though if done correctly offers you the best opportunity.
During the rut you will want to have all the details concerning where your does bed so you can get down wind of them when bucks cruise by checking them. Find every funnel between doe bedding and set up there.
Without this intel your not hunting your hoping. You also have to be realistic in your goals based on a solid property evaluation. If you have a very small parcel that has no buck bedding and it is the only property you have then your best time to hunt your exclusive property should be reserved for the rut and you should consider spending time on public land prior to the rut so your aren't educating the deer that do utilize it. I am certain Dan mentioned in one of his videos that you build the knowledge of the these bedding areas each year so you create more options to hunt the whole season.
My opinion is that if you have only one or two buck beds on your property....find them figure out how they get in and out of them and then set up in the best ambush place you can without hunting too close to the bed at all. You can't afford to burn those bridges if you are in a situation that gives you little resources, so you have to preserve the resources you have. However if you have lots of public and large chunck of private then gather all the intel you can and hunt in the place you are most comfortable with the knowledge and skills you have and most importantly HAVE FUN!
If hunting close to a bed and taking the chance of running him off the property causes you any greif then back away from the beds, go find them in the off season and set up as close as you feel confident doing.
I guess Dan is the best one to define how a beast hunts, but that is how this hunting beast goes about it. Good luck buddy....gathering the intel is as fun as hunting them

Re: Other succesful methods besides Beast style
After the rut when bucks are depleted and winter with lots of snow is setting in,a little bait near yard areas can be extremely effective. A common method here In the U.P. not as easy as it sounds for a mature buck though.

Re: Other succesful methods besides Beast style
I've had good luck hunting funnels and obstructions, even outside the rut. Very hard to get winded if you do it right and the deer can still have the wind in it's nose, making mature animals feel safe.
One of the public spots I hunt gets a LOT of pressure. I like to set up in major funnels that the deer almost have to use and let the other hunters push the deer right to me. It can be very effective. Shot 2 mature bucks the last 2 years this way.
I also like obstructions that the deer have to walk around. Often times I can access these spots with a deer free approach. I like to blow my scent right at the obstruction and most times the deer can still walk around the edges off the obstuction with the wind in their nose.

Re: Other succesful methods besides Beast style
Beast hunting = how Dan hunts.
I don't hunt like that.(either does his buddy Andrea, remember Marsh bucks where he is hunting a food plot?) Hunting like Dan on beds dosen't work everywhere. I don't like hunting one particular buck. As far as I can tell, bed hunting works good in marsh settings, and to a lesser degree everywhere else.
Why leave out rut? Because your just a lucky guy if you get a deer during rut?(As Dan says)
There's way more to deer hunting than hunting the one bed style.
A well rounded hunter, who changes his way through the season, and is a good woodsman, will kill the most.
Beast hunting SHOULD be any hard core technique that works, not just Dans(bed method) way...

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.

Keep rut techniques out to compare apples to apples.
Why? Are you saying everyone hunts the rut the same way?
Which phase(s) of the rut are you not wanting to talk about?

My guess and experience is rut makes alot of good hunters.
Separate the two and find the true "Indian" style of hunting...

My guess is ....some are more successful rut hunters than others. There has to be a reason for that.
I don't get the "Indian" reference.
