Have you seen this before?
Tree's growing out of dead trees? A first for me, as well as a nice chest/waist high rub line find.

I can't say I have.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Re: Have you seen this before?
I'll have to take a closer look when I go back to see if the tree is still alive.
Is it just me, or do the two trees (fallen and rubbed tree) look like two different tree species?

Agree on that, but not dead falls.

Re: Have you seen this before?
I wish I could find a post I made about this a while back. But anyways, I found a large deadfall about 2' diameter. It had full grown trees growing from it. That each were 30 or 4o feet tall.

Re: Have you seen this before?
Ive seen this several times as well.
Seen a lot of BIG trees growing on boulders and rocks too.
As for the ones growing on the dead tree, if you think about it it is the perfect location for plant to grow. Seeds fall into the crevices in the bark, it withholds moisture, gets plenty of sunlight.
If the tree decomposes slowly I supose it would be possible for it to make its way to the earth floor and survive? It would be cool to keep an eye on if its local.

Re: Have you seen this before?
what kind of trees are growing from the truck of the fallen tree? the trees growing from the fallen tree are probably the result of another tree dropping it's suckers. poplar tree are known to do this.

Re: Have you seen this before?
Wonder if the understory has to be very wet for this to take place?
