Large property, alot of timber, new to you.

You have exclusive hunting rights, except for the trespassers...

You come to realize that there is a very old, very big, very smart buck living in a more remote area of the timber.
You spring scout his beds, they are pretty impregnable...
Impossible to get close to unnoticed.
He is pretty much nocturnal, except for what he can see/smell/hear from his beds.

Your plan is to select a spot that you can get to and hunt him with a wind direction that is fairly common.
If he does not show the stand allows entrance/exit that he most likley will not travel and takes your scent stream away from his travel routes.

You choose to lure him there in shooting light with alot of bait scattered around that area.


Would it work?

Baiting can be a very effective method....... if done right. If it's legal then whether it's fair chase or not is up to the individual.

Do I think it is easier to kill a big buck with a bait pile?...No, but It is obviously easier to kill A deer over a bait pile.

Is it the best method?- No. I have come to the conclucion after my own expirences and reading that thee perfect bunker for a mature buck is, like you said, impregnible. That's why he's there. However I believe the perfect storm is a very rare occurance but if it happens....Set up on a excape path and have someone bump him to you quitely and slowly. Let the old fella think he's sneaking away. Then wack'm. He might not get up for a long time after dark, that just may be his style(and why he got that old).

Is it a "fair chase" scenario?- Definately yes, but I think an old buck is too smart to come into a baitpile during light hours, regardless of proximity. A food plot late season is a different story.
