Good news, bad news

Unread postby Mike » Wed Feb 24, 2010 6:24 am

The good news is we found the sheds to the buck I was after all fall, the bad news is we think he is dead and was a monster at only 3.5 years old :( We haven't scored him out yet but right now I'm guessing he would have been in the 165-170 range. Here are his antlers behind his set from last year, he put on about 40 inches in a year!

I really hope he isn't dead, but there was a weak buck pretty close to the sheds that had a big head and ended up dying on sunday. Unless I get a DNA test the only way to know for sure it to wait and see I guess. We are gonna age the teeth on the dead buck to see if it matches up.

Wow - impressive sheds. When you say "weak buck", explain the circumstance.

He was waiting to dye, too weak to get up and move very far. He was dead a within a day after we ran across him, not very far from where we last saw him. At least he died somewhat peacefully, not eaten alive or anything like that.

We usually find a few dead bucks each year but this one is tough cuz we had so much history with him. The funny thing is I thought all season that this was a different buck, a 5 year old. It makes a lot more sense now, from the behavior we saw from this buck. Last year when we found his sheds he was a 125 inch 2.5 I said we should give him a pass as a 3.5. Because we mistook him for another buck I hunted him hard for a lot of the season and had two close encounters with him! Oh well, hindsight is 20/20

Mike,
You should be able to easily ID the buck by looking at the portion of the antler that connects to the skull and matching it up to that spot on the skull... Each one is very different, like a finger print.

Dan I found that buck and its head was almost completely healed over, how do you compare it to the skull when it is filled in like that? It was very sad, I found the deer alive and he was too weak to even stand up. I even tried lifting him up after I realized he couldn't kick me too hard , and he still couldn't stand up.

By the way I like your new site. I am not much of a computer person but I think out of the ten times I have ever posted anything on the computer 7 of them were on your site and the other three were on a green bay site where the were ripping on Brett Favre.

Dan,
Was wondering if the fellas that found the deer was the
Deer you found the sheds from? Anymore history or pics with the deer or do you think in fact he died? Haven't seen anything else posted about it.
