Made my usual pilgrimage to the Upper Peninsula on Monday for our gun opener, the wind and rain followed me for the trip evidently. The weather was less than ideal but the area is perfect. The area we hunt is a little over 120 sq miles of swamps and hardwoods that is uncut by roads. we spend an immense amount of time and energy to get to the area we hunt and would not have it any other way. Some people say we are crazy but I say there is nothing like a big woods experience...until you do it, it is hard to understand. In the 15 years or so I have been hunting there...I have yet to see another human, I have had deer walk right by me within 15 feet and not recognize me as a threat and look at me like another deer walking through the area...hard to understand but totally awesome to experience!
Tuesday morning I left camp at 5:15 am for my 4 wheeler ride in and my walk to my stand, I arrived at my stand at 6:30 full of anticipation. It was dead calm and 23 degrees. I sat for 11 1/2 hours and saw 7 deer. 1 doe, 2 fawns, and 4 bucks...no shooters.
Wednesday it was windy and 19 degrees. I sat for the same 11 1/2 hours and saw 1 spike at 4:20 in the afternoon, that was it for the day.
Thursday I sat until noon when I had yet to see a deer so I decided to hang a scent wick of Wildlife Research Center Trails End #307...I climbed back into my stand and about 2 o'clock here come a deer to the scent wick, I noticed a rack through the spruce and tamarack trees so I go my video camera on and got my gun out the window of the blind. I don't know if it was the slow deer hunting or what but I decided that I was going to shoot this buck, not one I was really looking to shoot, but I honestly felt he was older when I shot. Either way, I am proud of him and am happy to punch my tag on a wild state land buck from the deep woods. Only bummer is I am done with my big woods hunting for the year and have to wait until next year to have that experience again. Here are a few pics of camp and my 2011 rifle kill

Congrats. Looks like a good setup to me.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Congrats on a nice buck. I love hunting the wilds of the U.P. Haven't done it for awhile but your story sure makes me want to get up there again.

Way to go Tim, you are having a heck of a year. I was thinking about heading to the UP for MZ season if I get a few days.

Lou I think MZ season is going to be bonkers up there...movement was super slow. If the weather co operates you would be in for some awesome hunting!
