Do the BlueJays help you out ?

Unread postby dreaming bucks » Sat Oct 15, 2011 6:34 am

Have you guys ever had a bluejay tell you a deer is coming your way ? It gets me fired up everytime I hear one start screaming, just hoping a big buck is coming my way... I have had them make a racket too many other times though, and nothing happens at all.... They still get me going though, especially when it's been slow in the woods....

x2 on all the above. Blue jays definitely are tattles. Usually something is moving, it's just not always deer. This is usually how i can tell if the neighbor is heading to his treestand on one property i hunt.

Yes I pay attention to all types of birds. In cattail marshes ducks suddenly flying up out of the cattails just before dark will usually tip me off that deer are coming. Usually that will give me a general direction and then I can watch for the tips of the cattails to start shaking.

You bet DB!! Bear hunting lots of times It's a bear coming. They'll follow the bear right to the bait. As for deer hunting I pay damn close attention to that too.

I've never had a bluejay alert me to a buck coming my way, but I have on several occasions experienced bluejays, magpies, or crows sound off just prior to having a coyote come in.

Ive never had them tip me off to deer, but wonder if they havent tipped deer off about me? Same with squirrels, they will sometimes notice me trying to sneak in and start their warning cry, or a subtle bark. I once had a squirrel that wouldnt shut up when I was hunting on the ground, he went home with me. :D

My dad and I were scouting a field one early season when I was ten and he was like "I'll bet you 5 bucks that a big buck will be coming out within the next five minutes" it wasn't even close to dark at that point, but there were a ton of blue jays sounding off in the woods, well go figure- a couple minutes later a big buck came out.

I pay attention to everything making noise or suddenly getting quiet. Every little bit of info helps... But squirrels running around on dry leaves drives me crazy after a while  Opening day I had a squirrel fall about 30' out of a white oak, scarred the skat out of me

I must be missing the boat! I have never heard of this. Why are deer and bluejays often together? I dont get it. I have seen plenty of squirrels bark but never noticed the bluejay thing

I don't think they hang out together, but if you have a Blue Jay in the area and a deer, or anything for that matter, hapends to come thru, the Blue Jay will start making an alarm call.
