Re: Arrow placement pics
I like that ACK.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Ack wrote:Good info Muddy, but those high quartered-to shots are iffy......hit high and you're getting all feathers, hit low and you have a wounded bird. Your best angle is either broadside or quartered away.....with these you'll either get the hips or the spine. If you NEED to shoot at the front of the bird you may as well aim at the base of the waddles.
Yea no disrespect to Muddy but those quartering to shots are too high, you will probably have a broken winged bird that you won't find...which is why so many guys quit bowhunting turkeys. Also keep in mind that in full strut those feathers stick up 3-4" above the bird. I have not lost a bird aiming for the thighs/hips, which is essentially dead center mass on a turkey. I used to aim for the wing but and too far forward, lost several birds that way. The thigh/hips are dead center of everything vital - shoot a nice big broadhead (I would say 2" cutting diameter 3 blade minimum) and hit 2" back you still are in liver guts and gizzard, 2" forward is still heart and lungs, 2" high is spine, 2" low is still bottom of vitals and broken thighs. On all those hits the bird probably lives less than 30 seconds.
The yellow circles are where I would aim, I made a line where the back of the bird is. Note I am not aiming low per se, just dead center mass essentially. Just food for thought, I think you get more margin of error this way. I do agree if you aim for the spine you will either miss or kill, but you will miss more often, an inch high hes gone.
This back line probably doesn't curve the way I drew it but its about the right height in the center.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, thus far my point of aim has done right by me. No offense taken!

Re: Arrow placement pics
Great post. I thought about hunting turkeys with a bow only because I have all the seasons to hunt. Hunting with a gun is only 4-5 days. Bow is over a month straight. Something to think about if your not able to take time off.
