Re: Anyone killed a Tom with 1 1/2 in spurs?
I started turkey hunting in 1993 and have killed about 70 turkeys and watched probably another 50 die. I have yet to kill one or see one die with 1.5 inch spurs or longer.
I personally blame it on my style of hunting. I like to call and like birds that gobble and strut. I just dont think a 5+ year old turkey plays the game that way at that age.
The guys I do know that have killed turkeys with long spurs and bushwhacked everyone of them.
Again just my opinion and something else to consider.

I've seen a few, but I've only killed one. Stats are lackluster aside from the spur length.
24 lbs, 6 ounce
9 inch beard
1 5/8 inch spurs

Period A, 2009
Zone 5
Are you sure your not related to Stanley somehow? The resemblance is uncanny!

I'm way better looking than that guy, for crying out loud.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

These are the biggest ones i have ever seen in person, a friends bird from a couple years ago. Wish i wouldve taken better pics and actually measured them.

Measure your thumb, take measurements on photo, and calculate :)

Re: Anyone killed a Tom with 1 1/2 in spurs?
I will vote after the season!!
As of now...1 1/4" is my best....
I have my eye on one now...I got glass on him the other day...when I first seen him I said "dang!! Good beard! Hits short grass in full strut!". Then I hit his legs and my jaw dropped...
He pretty much owns one of my tags this season....had him in a killable distance Monday but with light brush at the end of my muzzle I opted to let him slip away and not risk it...he seems to be getting hotter by the day and hens are nesting harder...
Ive found the older birds can be more vulnerable later in the season...
Hung 2 cameras today...gunna try to get pics of him and get a pattern figured out...
I dont know if he will go an inch and a half or not...but from the quick look I got I was pretty certain he has a serious set of hooks...
I dont know what it is....I get a kick out of targeting a single bird...people do it with bucks...not many do it for turkey...
I learn their gobble....their roost...their pattern..if I can't hunt em I keep tabs on them...I dont do it unless I know he's 3+yo..I love it...
Good way to eat tag soup...but I dont put all my eggs in the same nest...and eventually I will hunt a different bird or go take my frustrations out and kill any longbeard...
I enjoy the game...and to be honest...going out and killing a turkey isn't all too impressive...some birds can be red hot maniacs and literally run in fast and hard...boom its over..
Everyone has their own thing...I dont claim to be a professional turkey killer by any means...but 2008 I started hunting like this...ate my tag but learned more that season than the years prior of killing birds right away...2009 I targeted a bird and got my 1 1/4" hooks..I never heard another bird on that ridge till I fired...the woods echoed with gobbles for a half an hour..I really believe they knew the boss was dead...
Haven't hunted since...now this year I'm back to it...
Spurs to me mean a lot more than beard length...snow/ice, beard rot, nature put the beard a little lower or gave him a little shorter legs etc etc makes for a shorter beard....and beards typically all wear off in the 10-12" range which is hit by 2 or 3yo..
I love long sharp hooks...

Style of hunting for sure plays a role. Results from a forum full of dedicated hunters can looked skewed.

Yep. Weighed 28.5 lbs. wouldn't come in to calls so I snuck up on him and shot him at 15 yards. He was huge. When I carried him out, over my shoulder his head was hitting my calves. I'm 6' tall. It was the most fun hunt I've ever been a part of.

I shot 2 that had 1 1/2 spurs. My first one had 2 10" beards and only weighed 20 lbs.
