One More Down
With one day to go, we put another one down.
13 yr old nephew Zack filled his tag this am. His mom and I scheduled his hunt way back in Feb. They were coming Memorial Day Weekend. Arriving late fri night and leaving sunday afternoon.
I havent hunted or scouted this spot in 3 weeks, except some drive bys. Set up about 8:30 am at an area we saw dust bowls all season.
I am not much on calling but really ripped it up and tried to imitate a hen losing her nest.
Saw a blue head about 15 minutes after I ripped it up (to my amazement). I half thought we would hunt til the mosquitoes ran us off. The blue head went behind the rise and after another 15 mins I started to doubt we would have more action. Scratched a few purrs on the slate, then realized the custom box started it all. Picked it up again and tried to do a few subtle gobbler sounds (clucks soft yelps whatever you call it).
The blue head came in with a red head and a hen, straight at us. About 50 yds, they hang up. The red headed jake is really straining to bust us. He put his head down and moved in a bit more, I told Zach to ease the gun up over the RNG blind and shoot the one on the right (he was closer). He said it was too far, I said aim at the base of neck and shoot. BANG the 16 gauge barked abruptly. The blue head hit the dirt.
These are cell phone pics in the field. Blue head was a Jake. Paced distance on sligt incline about 35 yds, 14.8 lbs, beard was about 3.5 inch I will cut off and remeasure. But a great end to mine and Zachs season

Good Job Uncle Lou and Zack

Thanks all I will share this link with Zach. I have been writing about our adventures on forums since '08. Last years was a funny story (for me).

Way to go guys !!!
Late season birds are tough. Way to pull out the stops to see what works.
