Feeder or Alert????

Unread postby AC Rider » Mon Mar 26, 2012 12:43 pm

I quickly asked this question in another thread with no response so I'm trying again ;) I bought two new Zink decoys - a jake and a feeder. I've got a Cabela's gift card burning a hole in my pocket. Should I spend it on an alert/breeder hen or will the feeder be just as good??????

I would get the feeder, I seldom ever see a turkey in the alert position for more than 5 or 10 seconds. If you see them in that pose longer than that something is wrong. I almost always see turkeys with their heads in the feeding position, even when there walking its usually straight out in front or slightly up, but not alert. To me the alerts do way more harm than they do good.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks Brad

Ive noticed with my feeder as season wears on in open areas she almost vanishes. Ive had hens cross fields and if I didnt see them enter id never know where they were.

Alert seems to put toms on edge, They stop and look around to see what the hen is looking at. I like the relaxed feeder position better.

Not a Zink decoy, but I have had nothing but good luck with my upright DSD hen. Been using her for 3 seasons now and have never had a bird spook or put on edge....they almost always come over and check her out. As mentioned, feeders can be hard for the birds to see if you are in any kind of grass or corn stubble. I don't think you'll have any problems with the upright Zink added to your spread.

Thanks guys. I think I'll pick up a looker. It seems the Zink Looker and Breeder are the same thing so I'll kill two birds with one stone :D
