Turkey tactic's... "Locked up"

Unread postby dan » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:57 pm

Lets say your heading in from an unsuccessful morning hunt and spot a big tom 70 yards away. You crawl over to a nice tree and make a couple sexy yelps and the Tom starts coming in. He gobbles at your every call. But he stops about 55 or 60 yards out. As long as you call he stays. But when you quit he starts looking like leaving. What do you do next?

personally, i would stop calling and let him walk away. then when hes out of site or far enough away that i can sneak out, i would try and circle around him to get on the other side and cut him off

I would either let him move off and circle around or let him move off and then slide up to where he hung up and start calling again.

Let's also remember I'm known as "wrestles with turkeys", get an arrow into them and then go berzerker on them.

Seriously though, if a bird hangs at 50 or 60 and won't commit I let him walk off and try to get around on him. If my blind isn't staked down I will SLOWLY pick it up and move towards him as the opportunity presents. You'd be surprised how doing the Wile-E-Coyote Pine Tree sneak on them actually works to close the distance a bit.

I would probably quit calling and let him walk out of site, then figure out a new strategy. Maybe circle around and try to get in front of him if I have an idea where he's heading. Or maybe break out the Gobblin' Tom call and see if that intimidates him or gets him grumpy.
Guess it's one of those "I'd have to have it happen before I'd know what to do" things.

this is a common trait of mature gobblers, three and older. what is actually happenning,is pure instinct. a mature tom will work into an area where he expects to see the hen. when he doesn't, he instinctivly "hangs up" on the brightest spot, or highest spot,[ even a slight rise in the terrain], in relationship to you,the calling [ the hen ].when the hen doesn't show, he leaves. to kill him--- let him walk out of sight, stay low and back out at a left or right angle to the gobbler, all the while calling softly. soft yelps , purrs. when you have moved 100yrds. or so, set up near the "brightest spot" in that location. wait ten minutes. and start over. this a super tactic on old gobblers. dave

Shoot!! If it walks south shoot south.

Even Lungbuster will take the shot with the bow.

Yeah but I have more confidence that I could hit one with the bow at 60 than a 12ga..............(even though I missed........)
