Re: Charging grizzly vs shotgun
I've heard a bear can run 35 mph.
I believe if I were chased I could run 36 mph or bring along a friend that runs 34...

Sorry, after an attempt, or 2, at spooking it off no way I'd walk out in the yard. That's just asking for trouble.

This ^
Charging a mama bear seems like an invitation to get charged by a mama bear.

The guy is lucky to be alive. As fast as that bear was moving if he missed that shot it was all over.

Re: Charging grizzly vs shotgun
Birdshot, I'm guessing.
Looks like he blew part of her face to feathers, and maybe damaged the lower jaw by the way she held it open after spinning around.
He's lucky she didn't get ahold of him by chance after taking the hit; she still had plenty of fight left but was probably mostly blind by then.
Easy to be critical, but he should have let her get right up to the muzzle before pasting her, dead center to the face.
That would have been hard to do, but would have been his only prayer of busting through her skull plate and terminally braining her with the shot column.
(Again, assuming he really was stupid enough to go out there armed only with birdshot.)

Watch after the bear rolls and recovers, grabs his shoe that fell off and then just lets it go.

Re: Charging grizzly vs shotgun
Dude should never have been out there trying to irritate the mama bear so it would leave. Just leave nature be. In fact, enjoying it from a safe viewing distance would be even better. When it charged him he shouldn't have back peddled. He could have tripped and it would have been all over. He almost did. Once it charged the only option is to stand your ground and shoot to kill. Now there's a wounded mama bear roaming around pissed off because she's got a shoulder full of buckshot. Wonder how that will work out for the next human encounter... Assuming she doesn't succumb to the wound and is able to raise her cubs... All because the dude wanted to play cowboy.
Just a lot of stupidity here and no one wins.

Re: Charging grizzly vs shotgun
I've seen a few videos like that. I'm not sure I'd stay as reserved as those guys, but what alternative is there?
