Jim,
By the looks of the map he posted, I think he must be pretty close to your place eh?

Isabella is quite a ways west of Grand Marais. He's over by where the Pigami Creek fire was.

We just discovered that the Superior National Forest allows dispersed camping with leave no trace ethics. Since we'll be hunting close to the border, camping in the national forest and hunting in the BWCA will open our options up quite a bit.

Your not camping in the canoe area? You going to canoe back and forth?

The river runs in and out of the BWCA. There are a few campsites spotted along it that we can stay at. But if there's a hunting area that's closer to the national forest than a BWCA campsite (many of them were closed after the fire too) we have the option of staying in the national forest. In the back of our minds we always have speed of kill site to camp to vehicle to help preserve meat. Our plan keeps evolving the more we look at the maps and will probably continue to evolve while we're there. We absolutely have to hunt in the BWCA because our tags are only good for that area.
