checking a bear den...

Unread postby natvbearhntr » Sat Mar 09, 2013 7:15 am

I went out with a group of biologists to check a bear den. This is a 3 year old male. Sorry in one of the videos I forgot to turn my phone sideways.

one more. The collars cause neck rot on the bear and its a pretty bad smell. They will leave this bear go now and not be able to track him anymore. Last year he was shot in the shoulder with an arrow and it broke off in the shoulder. They didn't think the bear would make it through the year. This wound healed well and there is no sign of rot but the broadhead and a piece of arrow is still in the shoulder.

You're all welcome. They actually net the bear and hang him from a portable scale. He weighed 135lbs. We went to one other den but the female is a digger and she was dug in about 8'. We could have darted her and got her out but she was in with 3 yearling cubs and whoever went in to hook her paw would have gotten bit by the cubs. It is really cool when they have new borns because they take them out without darting them and they allow you to hold them and keep them warm in your jacket. I missed that check this year.

Very cool, I'm surprised at how clear the cameraphone footage was.
