GROW YOUR OWN MILKWEED...

Unread postby dan » Sun Apr 08, 2012 9:50 am

I was doing some research and found a site trying to "save the butterfly's" and they are worried about Monarchs whose only food source is milkweed... So what does this all mean to us? Well, for a contribution of $3 and a self addressed stamped envelope they will send you 150 milkweed seeds. For additional seeds you are requested to give one additional dollar for every 50 additional seeds.
There are seed growing instructions on the site, it also says, you get an already started plant for each order made this month, and you can buy started plants for 1 dollar each...
Milkweed grows annually, so plants started now will supply you with milkweed for this fall...

True that... I was thinking the same thing. It appears that the money is used to fund the "save the butterfly campaign" and I could care less about that.

I agree.

If anyone wants to buy seed, I can guarantee the proceeds aren't going to an anti-hunting group.

You'd have to wait for this years crop though, as I didn't realize there was a market for it.

It grows like crazy all around my home and most of my hunting areas. I can pretty much pick a pod right through November most places I go. I can sure sympathize with those that have little to none of it around.

Dont have much hear either. It grows in little pockets or you will find a random plant in the middle of a field somewhere...

Butterflies are cool in my opinion, one of several "indicator species" that so long as theyr'e around things are somewhat OK in that specific environment.

I have several varities of milkweed planted in my yard as theyr'e a native Iowa plant species, they have cool flowers, they attract cool butterflies, and they produce windicators!

A bit off topic but, I've thought the same thing. There is a chunk of public land here (94,000 acres) between KY and Barclay lakes. Very little agriculture. In the spring and summer it's amazin at the butterflies there. Once you get away, out around the counties there isn't near as many. One of the forestry people told be it was due to the pesticides used on crops.

Three dollars for 150 milkweed seeds? Doesn't one pod hold about 1000 seeds? I could be selling milkweed pods for $20 bucks a pop all in the name of healthy Monarch butterflys!

I have at least 50+ milkweed plants growing in a low spot in my back yard this year. I just took all the seed I had from last year and threw it around back there.
