Any long time Beasts remember the Ice Quake I experienced? Truly once in a lifetime on Michigan’s Saginaw Bay.

Re: Ice Quake !!
Bridge I always try to read your stuff.
Too funny because I was hunting along Lake Huron shoreline during the MZ season this December and was hearing waves gently crashing and ice must have been involved and it was messing with me. I could of sworn that deer were running around. They weren't, it was a little ice forming and some light waves rolling. Messed with me for about an hour and I was back in there the next morning.
I did kick a couple of deer up when I went in there to figure out what the heck was going on.
No, I don't remember that post

Re: Ice Quake !!
The Saginaw Bay Ice Quake... wish I had videotaped it. We had an extended cold spell that went on for weeks. It was so cold that even the pressure cracks froze solid on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay. After weeks of cold, a major thaw was predicted with well above freezing temps. The ice fishing weather was fabulous with warm air and tons of ice.
But something had to give. The Bay is a huge body of water and when it fluctuates the pressure cracks maintain the integrity of the ice. I was sitting in my shanty with the door open as were thousands of others across the Bay.
Suddenly it happened- an explosive sound that pierced the ears with what sounded like a mix between a sonic boom and a thunderclap. A literal icequake ensued ! My shanty moved backward a couple of feet, then to the side a couple of feet before finally settling in and moving forward. The water in my ice fishing holes erupted like a geyser and came straight up for a couple of feet. Finally, everything settled back to normal. I jumped out of my shanty and total and complete panic gripped the fisherman.
There were countless fisherman running in every direction, including away from shore ! The panic - flight response overwhelmed the sensibilities of many !
I'll never forget the sight of hundreds of fisherman running all out with most of them running in the wrong direction ! Truly once in a lifetime.
A new pressure crack formed and ran from Michigan's thumb all the way across the Bay to the east coast... a monumental crack indeed !

Big time, I've never experienced anything like that. It fits in with the deaths, Coast Guard Air Station Detroit, my rescuing guys that were going to die... lots of adventure on the Bay and no place for a greenhorn. Yet they will come and more will die this winter. But the fishing should be good.

Re: Ice Quake !!
Do you remember what year this was?? I live near the bay by the casino. I’ve heard of something similar. Possibly the samething. I do a fair amount of fish on the bay. Hard and soft water.

I will try and find that old post to find the year.
Meanwhile the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City rescue helicopter just flew over me, coming in from the northwest to get to Saginaw Bay... not good.

Re: Ice Quake !!
With Air Station TC helicopter on the Bay, that means Essexville Coast Guard is out with their airboat and divers. None of these guys are getting paid because of the shutdown. The Essexville police department are accepting prepaid credit cards to give the Coast Guard crews... looks like it’s time for me to help out.
