Saginaw Bay hot for walleye
The Bay is really taking off right now, hopefully Saturdays cold front doesn't mess it up too much. Everything is working, meat / plugs / spoons etc. Surprisingly, the fish on the inner Bay are deep already, which is quite early. The water temps don't support it, but that's what keeps it interesting.
It's time to stock up for some great fish fry's!!

Looking good. Those cold fronts are killers.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Saginaw Bay has become a "quantity" rather than "quality" fishery with small eyes becoming the norm. They are naturally producing so well that they are eating themselves out of house and home. Looks like the DNR is going to drop the size minimum to 13" down from 15", and increase the bag limit from 5 up to 9 or 10. All my fish were 15" to 22". We still catch the occasional toad, but they are the exception during summer months. I still get a fair number of bigger walters in early spring and the winter though.
Hard to complain about eating 15" to 19" inch walleyes, and the kids I take out love the consistent action.

Re: Saginaw Bay hot for walleye
them r perfect eaters bridge ! most of our fish were 22-27 inch range. we were fishing at eastern end of bay at tip of the thumb. we hammered the smallies to. one of my favorite things about Michigan is the great fishing. weather its pike..steelhead..or delicious bluegill ur never far from a great fishing adventure. the eye r super hot on the east side. very few anglers come back empty handed.

Re: Saginaw Bay hot for walleye
Been finding em deep as well, which seems a bit odd this early into it

Re: Saginaw Bay hot for walleye
Regarding size, over the years I have watched low populations with big fish, to what we have now- huge populations with a smaller average size. I have caught dozens of trophy walleyes on the Saginaw Bay and its tribs, as well as guiding others to their first ten pound walleye. It all seems cyclical and I've enjoyed it in all phases. Between my brother and my boats alone, we have netted over a thousand walleyes in a single season while working full time jobs elsewhere.
You will never hear me complain, it sure beats work!
ps, we release fish too- we don't kill everything we catch (didn't want to get anyone's dander up)!

Re: Saginaw Bay hot for walleye
The hot fishing continues... The fish are everywhere on SagBay right now, from shallow to deep. I've only made 2 trips that didn't yield a boat limit and one of those was due to someone getting seasick. Get out there while the fishings hot if you are able!
