LiDAR maps - FugroViewer

Unread postby Corsair7 » Thu May 10, 2018 12:45 am

For anyone looking for a program that opens LiDAR map files FugroViewer is free software that recognizes (*.las,*.laz,*xyz,*.tif,*.hdr,*.img).

Have been playing around with it a few days and thought I'd share.

I use https://www.coast.noaa.gov/dataviewer/#/lidar/search/ zoom into the area I'm interested in that has data. Draw my search area, add it to my shopping cart and checkout. It's all free and within minutes a *.tif file is sent your email that was provided at checkout.

I then open it up in FurgoViewer, there is a lot that can be done with this viewer and I am still playing around with it. I have found you can drop pins on locations and generate a 3D model for the LiDAR map.

Here is an example I did on a hunt last season:

LiDAR topo map with pins dropped to mark locations, brown pin (buck), yellow pin (place of shot), blue pin (kill tree) and red pin (buck died).

3D LiDAR map with same pins:

I know there are more sites out there that have LiDAR data that can be downloaded, FugroView gives the ability to view them for free.

If you have any questions let me know, hope this helps people out and an added tool for the BEAST community.

Here are some videos I found on YouTube for FugroViewer and getting LiDAR data

Downloading and using FugroViewer:

Downloading LiDAR data online using USGS Earth Explorer:

Personally I have not yet downloaded from USGS, there are plenty of different sites to get LiDAR data. I have used NOAA and think it was pretty straight forward.
