Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
Kinda curious how many days you guys especially the ones that are successful over and over are scouting. I have already scouted more this season then I ever have before. Maybe you guys can post up what you feel the minimum amount of days you could scout in a season to be successful in taking a trophy (for you) buck every season.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I picked "31-40" with the breakdown looking something like.
12-15 days of spring scouting 4-6hrs each.
12-15 days of glassing/shining from the first week of August through last middle of October about 2-3 hrs each.
8-10 days setting or retrieving trail cams. While not as in depth, I always have my eyes open anytime I'm in the woods.
I will also do some in season scouting as well if I hunt an area early season that I plan on coming back to in a few weeks. I will hunt an evening then come back the next morning and do 2-3hrs of scouting to see of there is any fresh sign from that fall in expected or new areas.

41-50 for me. Each year is different though. Some years I am on to new spots that require more scouting/observing. Some years I am able to hunt the same spots I have been successful from in the past. I still scout/observe, just not as much needed as a new spot.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I am constantly looking when out in the woods. Even if I have a primary objective I am always looking for some clues. I also use cameras to help me monitor things. So I am scouting even as I am punching keys on the computer. I found 2 super looking spots this year I set a camera up on each of those spots to see if my hunches are correct.
I really like using cameras they give me non evasive low impact scouting. I set the cameras up for optimal buck movement not where I would set up and hunt. If the camera intell shows good movement I may hunt in that area this year or maybe in the years to come. So I guess I'm in the 100 + category.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I chose 31-40. That's wintet spring bed scouting , glassing, running cams, and observation sits for inventory in summer. Usually only get 15-20 days hunting in fall. I would do more if I could

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I would say I average in the 41-50 range. Some years more some years a little less depending on work and if I have weekends off. I start scouting immediately after the season ends and get my best work done with snow on the ground. This is actual feet on the ground scouting, if I included cyberscouting, glassing and shining it is much higher. Rarely a day goes by that I am not at least cyberscouting.

Actual boots on the ground 20-40, but I'm on Google earth or cal topo everyday, and spend a lot of time driving through areas too

I voted 31-40 but that's a complete guesstimate. I don't keep track of it. All combined, with spring scouting, summer scouting and in season scouting. Could possibly be more. IDK

Somewhere between 20-30 so far this year. With the exception of one area, everything from now until season will be going in to areas already picked out to work on entrance, check wind, prep, etc.

Hard to say. I went Morell hunting twice this weekend and both times found myself scouting for deer tracks, trail, and sheds. I did find a dead buck fawn from last fall though.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I have scouted more this spring season than I did last spring season. I'm almost at a spot where I've got too many places to hunt and not enough hunting days for all of them.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I am different from the other guys I guess.
I negotiated/agreed to four boots-on-the-ground-days between January and April. I have a wife and three children (8,6,4 years old). They come first.
Now those four days are dark-to-dark, and video notes carefully taken and scrutinized explicitly. Now I am running cams and occasionally waking up very early to travel and return before everyone wakes up on Saturdays.
Then in season scouting and observations will happen on hunting days which I will soon be budgeting out months ahead of time. Just what I have to do. I have to make the best of my situation and limitations, just like everyone else.
In some ways my limited opportunities keep me more intentional and more focused. I don't mind. I have a great family, and they deserve to be first.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
11-20 mostly all day boots on the ground spring scouting. 16 days for me this year.
If I am to include trail cameras, shining, glassing, etc. numbers are way higher obviously.

Re: Poll-How many days do you scout for hunting deer?
I try to do something whitetail once every stretch of days I have off, so that would equal once a week, sometimes more sometimes less, approx 50+. May be a quick couple hour walk - half day deal
