County land scout 2/20/16

Unread postby hoot » Sun Feb 21, 2016 11:33 am

I finally got out to scout some county land that just opened last fall about a mile from home. I heard a lot of people hunted it prior to the county buying it last year. It's a few hundred acres? with a large area of woods surrounded by marsh and crops and a creek running through the upper 1/3. The crops are on private, except a little area on one corner of the property, about a few acres in size, which was corn last year. I've been cyberscouting this for a while, and drive by quite regularly and had some areas picked out I wanted to check. I came across 3 ladderstands and 2 trees that were used for stands, one had steel pegs and the other had a bow hook and the bark scraped up from a climber. I headed to the cattails. Cyberscouting only showed a few trails running thru them and one big tree that looked promising. Boots on the ground showed much much more. The first trail I got on took me to a small tree that held a bed.

Once I got in the cattails I could see many small trees and bushes, all connected by trails. The woods form a semi-circle around the marsh and the trails come out to them. I came across 4 beds and backtracked the trails to find my tree to setup in. 4 beds and 6 trees.

I really wanted to check that big tree I cyberscouted, so I headed over that direction. As I approached I jumped a deer. Couldn't see horns but it was a decent sized deer. I got to the tree and knew it was a buck bed, or beds, as there were 2 different spots that were matted down. One of the smaller trees, about 2" diameter, had a rub, and the big tree, a good 14" diameter tamarak, also had a rub. Some fairly large droppings as well.

I followed the trail to the mainland and picked out a couple trees. I plan on going back when the rest of the snow melts to get another look and fine tune my setups if needed, as well as shed hunt. All in all it was a productive day. Found a good buck bed and lots of good spots to stick a doe.

We just don't get cattail marshes around here. I wish we had them though. Some of our native grass fields kinda act the same way though.

Nice find and great investigative work. Those spots are great find if you can hunt them before the everyone else finds out.
