Blazing a trail through the cattails

Unread postby Timmy » Fri Mar 01, 2013 3:18 pm

I am new to the hunting beast and cant get enough of this site! Ive been doing alot of readiing on here and learning alot, and now its time to start asking some questions. In the marsh bucks video Dan talks about blazing a trail through the cattails. Well ive been doing some scouting and have found a few beds that i think im gonna have to make my own trail to get back to. My question is when is the best time to do this? If I make a trail now, will it grow back up in the spring/ summer months? Or would i be better off waiting until spring to do it?

I would think your trail would stick around as long as animals start to use it to keep it matted down. Therefore it would probably need to nearly parallel an existing game trail

The best time to make a trail in cattails with a machete is July... If you made the trail now, you would not be cutting the new growth cattails.

I have left Green Bay in July. Drove 4 hours to the hill country I hunt. Hung and trimmed a couple stands in 90 degree heat, mosquitoes and multi floral rose, and drove back to Green Bay a sweaty mess. More than once too! It can be done in July!! Yes we are the minority!!

It's all part of the experience. When Timmy slaps his tag on a well earned trophy, he'll think back on all the work and know he earned it!

Here is a trail I cut in July about 15 years ago.... Still in use.
I have a certain tree I go in at, and the trail starts about 10 yards into the cattails... Deer and critters have kind of connected the trail to the edge though.
