As I see it....it is hard to make notes on an aerial or topo and be able to see what you mark.

I just use my GPS to mark stuff and add notes to the waypoints. I'm not trying to be a smarty pants but what (besides what I mentioned) good would a journal do? Have you guys that keep journals been able to turn your info into killing deer? If so, explain.

I am hoping to be able to get a good overview of each area.

Marking other hunters stands, clumps of rubs, large scrapes, trails, bedding areas....etc.

That one spot is maybe 320 acres of public, if I look over seven spots like that I would have a hard time keeping it all straight in my head.
Three or four more trips there and I will have some good info to look at on my diagram.
Will it help me kill a buck....maybe/maybe not.
Do not know unless I try.

But I really believe that I can come up with some good spots to hunt for early season, pre rut and rut.
But maybe that is wrong?

I do not use a GPS.

same here ;)

but what (besides what I mentioned) good would a journal do?
it helps put together a plain when looking at a cretin map and area...... not just scouting info but hunting encounters ...you can pull out a map of a bedding area and read the notes , what wind you saw the deer how, what, why, and when ECT.... and put it together ...this is how it helps me ...i hunt multiple tracks of public land ...this is the only way to keep track of bedding areas

Have you guys that keep journals been able to turn your info into killing deer? If so, explain.

yes i have...... all four of my mounts and most of my dinks  were shot with a plain from my scouting journal ....and i plain on it again this year in 2012....... ;)

Can you explain this in more detail. Can you use one of your kills and go thru the process of using info from your journal and how you formulated a plan that resulted in the successful harvest?

Since I got my GPS and put it to work it is by far my most important tool. I have aerial photos on it as well. It is an unbelievable tool and a must have for anyone who hunts many areas and new areas. I can go to a new area and look at it from above and with topo and I already know where I want to look before stepping in the woods. when I go in I mark rubs, beds, scrapes, other peoples stand sites, etc. I transfer the info to my laptop and it's unbelievable how things just jump out at me.

Some areas that I thought I knew well really looked different than I pictured them in my mind from scouting without a GPS.

In the past I used to walk miles on logging roads to check out new areas. Now I can get a good overview right from my truck with my laptop. In many cases it saved me a lot of unproductive walking.

You gotta get yourself a GPS! 8-)

Google Earth does wonders! I just type in notes and add pictures on every location when I come back.

I think we are all logging the same stuff just using different things to keep track of our scouting notes.

I use to use a notebook but now use a computer to keep track of everything. Every chunk of land gets its own file and I add aerials, topo, notes, photos, trails, beds, rubs, scrapes, stands, encounters/weather and anything else I can think of. The GPS certainly has one big advantage as you can carry/use it in the field. I just probably can't log as much info into a gps as I want to in my scouting notes.
