First outing of the year

Unread postby Boogieman1 » Sun Apr 21, 2019 7:44 am

Got the itch to fling a few arrows at live targets. Water is just a tad to cool to get em up really shallow where I like em but still fun and got a couple. Yabba Dabba Doo!

Got the itch to do my first bowfishing trip of the year. Arrive at my destination and see carp rolling all in the weeds. Things were definitely about to get ugly! First shot of the day my only arrow goes flying across the lake. Apparently my line was rotted!

One of the worst things about living out in BFE is if u need something it’s gonna be a considerable drive. Took me over 2 hrs round trip to get a new arrow.

Just tried these few weed patches behind the house for a bit and got a couple. Tomorrow I believe things are gonna get serious.....

It is fun! You should try it bet u would like it. Pretty dang cheap to get started at least the stuff I use. Isn’t like hunting or fishing where u wait around hoping one comes by. They are either home or not. Just keep moving til u find em. When u do it’s pretty action packed. Give it a try...

What do you do with the carp?

I speared one once, it was about 3 ft long (broke spear trying to lift it) and stunk to high heaven. Swore I'd not do that again.

I give the carp to a local bait shop who cuts em up and sells them as fresh cut bait. I’ve pressure cooked em b4 and removed bones and used it as dog food. Dog said it was alright but needed more salt.

Bury them in the garden is my typical strategy. Makes for some good fertilizer.

Thanks, guys. Just curious.

We used to catch herring/alewives and till em into the garden when I was a kid. About a garbage can full of 8 to 12 inch shad pretty much.

I’m thinking of going bowfishing tomorrow. Anyone who knows me knows I’m a competitive sob. I’m also a raging crappie lunatic. Hard to pull off the crappie to go bowfishing for carp so I’m looking for some motivation. I got probably 3 hours in the morning from 9-12 to give it a whirl. So what’s a good day of bowfishing? I want a number to chase. So what’s the over/under?

I hope I didn’t disappoint ya John. I gave it my best shot. Conditions weren’t very good. High winds made the water muddy and I couldn’t see very well. Had a couple of the bigger fish pull off my arrow and I flat missed a couple. All in all a fun morning.
