What Time to Hunt Hills

Unread postby Tim H » Thu Apr 08, 2021 1:11 am

As a novice of hill country I have very little experience. I'm thinking perhaps the pre rut/rut is a great time to get in the hills. But with that said, I'm thinking of when to enter the woods in the morning. Is it best to head earlier morning before light? I use a head lamp in the morning to see where I'm going, especially if I'm unfamiliar to the areas I'm hunting. If I head in a couple hours before dark, will I alert every deer on the ridges with my light? If I bump them is it not really the worst? Is it best to wait after light and head in quietly?

So if you had a choice of a rut hunt in the hills and you wouldn't have to drive 2 hours to get there. What time would you enter the woods?

If I already have an tree or spot picked out I like to get to it an hour to half hour before it starts getting light out. If I don't have a spot picked out I'll hike with headlamp to the general area, maybe holding back a hundred yards or so about a half hour before light. Then wait till I can see a bit and basically still hunt till I find a good spot to set up.

A somewhat related question to both this thread and this one: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58503

Where would you set up? Higher or lower than expected travel in the AM? Obviously taking thermals into account.

For me I'd intend to set up higher rather than lower based on how I'd expect the deer to move through the properties I'm looking at.
