Public Land Iowa (First post on Beast)

Unread postby malcom1286 » Thu Sep 12, 2019 7:09 am

After 4 long years this Louisiana boy was finally awarded my zone 5 tag for Iowa!! Super pumped!! I will be heading up for a scouting trip in two weeks and planning to hunt Nov 1-16.

I am looking at hunting Stephens state forest (whitebreast, woodburn units etc..)

Also looking at sedan bottoms wma because of the diversity of habitat.

What is the pressure like on these two (for Iowa) large pieces?

Heads up to others hunting south central Iowa this year, I just got off the phone with the Game warden for Decatur and Clarke counties and they are getting pounded by EHD which has me concerned about the units of Stephen State Forest that I am looking at hunting.

Welcome to the beast. Warren county appears to be getting hit the worst with EHD

Hey man. We have a few conversations going on about EHD on iowawhitetail.com. here's a listing of EHD deaths so far ( that have been turned in) compared to 2017 total harvests. A couple counties are hosed as I bet there are dozens, if not hundreds, of deer not turned in.

2017 harvest / 2019 EHD
Warren - 2,767 - 460
Clarke - 1,921 - 90
Madison - 2,849 - 61
Polk - 1,085 - 43
Lucas - 2,106 - 35
Marion - 2,148 - 32
Monroe - 2,036 - 23
Decatur - 1,766 - 22
Dallas - 1,389 - 11
Appanoose - 2,009 - 1

Do you guys think EHD is worse this season because we’ve gotten a lot of rain this season?

Terrible news. I thought EHD hit on dry years because the midges hatched in the exposed mud??

When we got hit a couple of years ago it was one of the wetter years on record. The "experts" then said it was because there was water holes where there typically wasn't giving them more area. Don't know if they really know?

What I've read/seen. It works both ways. Dry years it exposes mud that is usually under water. Wet years "new" mud is formed. I believe it's as the mud dries. That the midges hatch and do their thing!

The game warden I talked to said it’s been strange because it hasn’t been overly hot and there has been plenty of moisture.

From what I understand its because we had so much high water this spring so there was more flooded muddy areas left afterwards. More breeding ground/habitat for the midges henceforth more midges. More midges more bites more EHD.

Regardless it sucks.
