How Old Is This Deer
I just wanted to see how old some of you thought this buck was, without seeing the rack. The pic was taken in Massachusetts on public land. I didn't take the pic, but I did kill the buck.
If anyone else wants to post a pic like this(deer without rack) on this thread, please do so.

Re: How Old Is This Deer
My guess...5 1/2. He's long and big, his body is starting to sag and his neck is flowing into his body to give him a bull like appearance. definitely a mature deer. can,t wait to see the rack.

Re: How Old Is This Deer
I was gonna guess 4 1/2. Saggy neck and heavy chested, but I don't see the big saggy belly characteristic. Then again, if it's during the rut maybe he's worn some of that off??
Just a guess.
Just a guess.

The pic was taken either Nov 30 or Dec 1st, a few days before I killed him in early Dec.

At least 4 1/2, has all the things I look for body wise. Big neck, saggy chest, nose seems to be getting that Roman look, I would be drawing my bow even without being able to see the rack!

3 at the oldest. Wouldn't be surprised if only 2. Can't really judge because of the white blank, but the distance from his eyes to his nose isn't really long like that of an old codger. But for me the tell tale is the "V" shaped body yet with no sign of sagging. He does have a good chest on him which tells me 3 but the belly being smaller than the chest tells me 2.

That's a cool pic, he sure is unusual. The wrinkled neck and sagging esophagus sure contrast the short/cute-sie head and thoroughbred racehorse look of the chest and abdomen. I'm going with 3 1/2, curious to hear more.

Re: How Old Is This Deer
I think the big neck is fooling most of you... The belly don't sag, the nose don't arch, the chest don't appear to extend out in front of the front legs... 3 1/3.. To big to be a 2 year old. But don't have the characteristics of a 4 year old.
I think removing the rack was a great idea... So many people falsely judge bucks age by the rack.

Re: How Old Is This Deer
Another clue: this is not a mid west buck, but a northeast buck. This buck lived in the big woods. Not a corn or soybean field anywhere for miles. The area had some logging activity, but no real high protein food sources. He came from vast hemlock, and hardwood forest.

For comparison here is another deers teeth, and a pic of the other deer, which I think is 2 1/2 or 3 1/2.

My field judgimg skills could use some work. The only deer i've even attemted to field judge were midwest deer. the nose does look short but thats no sure sign of age. Hm...Spysar, do you Know how old it is?
