Name that nut!

Unread postby Boogieman1 » Tue Sep 28, 2021 6:36 am

In an effort to promote woodsmanship and get folks thinking I would like to start a game of name that nut! Not all nuts are created equal and drop at different times. I believe it’s important to understand this in the whitetails woods. I know the names of my fishing lures too! Share pic of both the nuts any nuts (except your own) as well as the leaf and let’s get educational. I will start ….

Shingle Oak is my guess.
On my deathbed, I will receive total consciousness. So I have that going for me, which is nice!

The leaves look more like a pignut hickory but the nut looks like a white oak

Willow oak or Penoak.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

My bad, name the tree that produced the nut. Name the nut just sounded better.

That’s easy. Acorn tree.

Eh. I’m not the best with this stuff but those look like what we call water oaks down here.

Well since a couple have named it, I will come clean. Winner…… Shingle Oak! Now u might ask yourself who cares. Well I care! Why? Cause all you mainly hear is white oak and red oak. The shingle oak is a very close relative of the red oak. So if u don’t have “red oaks” but you got shingle oaks then your in the chips if you know how to locate em.
