Buck that got away is back home
I have mentioned this buck a couple of different times on the forum over the last couple years. And will provide a quick recap of its story.
3 years ago my friend who was in the army but on leave shot this buck but hit him square in the shoulder (pre-high FOC arrows,etc.). We lost blood the next morning after about a 1/4 mile of tracking. Jump ahead to the next season the second week in october I have an encounter with this buck at 9 yards. He snuck up behind me and I was unable to get situated for a shot before he must of got a hint of my wind. He didn't bust but he stopped on his path and made a big circle around me. The first week of November I was sitting on the ground and had him come out to a field edge. I tried to parallel him along the field edge but lost him eventually. The beginning of January I had my final encounter with him. I was climbing up my stand, about half way up I thought I could see antlers in the woods edge across the field. Sure enough he was bedded up along the woods scent checking another field. The wind was in my favor and I could have made a stalk on him however, my friend was returning for leave again in two weeks. I decided not to go after him. We never saw him the rest of the season.
That February after season I went to look for sheds. He lost very early the year before so I went back to the same location I found his shed previously. Incredibly there were his sheds again. 30 yards from where they were just a year ago. About the same time my little brother said he found a dead deer. It had been dead a while (not much left on the skeleton). It had huge bases. Sure enough the sheds matched up perfectly. The buck had died after shedding his antlers. I ended up finding another old shed of his as well that same day.
We decided to get him mounted since I had his base plate and the history we had with him. I am not about hunting a single individual deer, but this guy will always stay with me as the one that got away.

Very nice! I’m glad you got him and gave him the recognition he deserved. I think trophy deer should get treated like trophy deer, even as hard as the circumstances turn out. So many times I’ve heard stories similar to this where a neighbor found the rack. I think it’s a shame sometimes to see a mature rack get thrown in a box or tossed in a shed somewhere.
Be original and Enjoy every step along the adventure.

Absolute hammer. And cool story and reason for putting that thing on display. Totally worth it.

These are his sheds from the year before the mount (when my friend wounded him).
Here are the 3 years of sheds side by side. I was looking through our other sheds and their is a fourth at the top that looks like it could be his as well. However, I couldn't claim for sure that is him like the other 3 years.

The sheds alone are nice trophies.
Man, I'd get them mounted up on the wall somewhere near the shoulder mount!

I think the plan is to create a pedestal underneath the mount to put the sheds on. I also have the euro mount of the buck I shot on that property that we used for the cape of the mount. I think we may put that on the pedestal as well to explain the full story of the mount.
