Lots of great advice above.
Public land is “first come first serve”. Everyone pays the same fee to hunt the same land. When I hunt public land I make sure to have 2-3 alternate sets so I can shift as needed to under pressure.
When it comes to navigating and marking sets I use a gps to get there and the only thing I mark is the tree. When I hunted from trees I would mark them with a strip of flagging tape using 4 reflective tacks so I I can find it coming from any direction. I always marked them at the desired tree stand night. That way I always knew what height I wanted to be at for that set, people rarely look up so most don’t see it, and no one is going to mess with my marking.
